This book, originally entitled An Adventure Among the Rosicrucians, was first published anonymously under the pseudonym "A Student of Occultism" in 1887, but with copyright in the name of Franz Hartmann to protect its text.
In 1910, Hartmann republished the story with a new title: With the Adepts. However, in his preface, he mentioned that it "has been gathered from notes handed to me by a friend, a writer of considerable repute."
That friend and writer was H. P. Blavatsky.

Hartmanns Werk stellt in seiner Eindringlichkeit und der fürchterlichen Fallbeispielen die ganze Unzulänglichkeit der damaligen Schulmedizin bezüglich der Feststellung des Todes bloß und beweist stichhaltig, daß der Mensch weit mehr ist als reine Materie, wie die anerkannte Wissenschaft uns glauben machen will.

I AM penning these lines in a little village in the Alpine mountains, in Southern Bavaria, and only a short distance from the Austrian frontier. The impressions I received yesterday are still fresh in my mind; the experiences which caused them were as real to me as any other experience caused by the events of every-day life; nevertheless, they were of such an extraordinary character that I cannot persuade myself that they were more than a dream.

Having finished the long and tedious labour of investigating the history of the Rosicrucians, and studying old worm-eaten books, mouldy manuscripts hardly legible from age, passing days and parts of night in convent libraries and antiquarian shops, collecting and copying everything that seemed to be of any value for my object in view, and having at last finished my task, I made up my mind to grant to myself a few holidays, and to spend them among the sublime scenery of the Tyrolian Alps.

With the Adepts

Books on true occultism are on the whole very useless things; because those who are in possession of occult knowledge will not require them; while those who have no such knowledge will not understand them; neither will they receive much benefit from such literature; because real spiritual knowledge must be found within one's own soul; it cannot be learned from books. The scientist, rationalist, and speculative philosopher deals only with, so to say, the candlesticks bearing the candles from which is emanating the light which they cannot see, neither can they see the candle; for the latter is representing the soul, whose light is the spirit.

Truly occult and Theosophical books ought to be prayers and poems; calculated to lift the heart and the mind of the reader up to the highest regions of thought, and aiding him to descend into the innermost sanctuary of his own being; so that he may become able to open the senses of his interior perception and grasp himself those divine ideals which are beyond the understanding of the semi-animal intellect; for spiritual truth cannot be brought down to that level; it requires, for its recognition, the rising up in the spirit to its own plane; neither can any man reveal to another the light, if the light does not reveal its presence to the investigator; all that a book can do is to aid the reader in opening his own eyes.

Nur gibt es ebenso viele Übersetzungen wie Meinungen über dieses fabelhafte Buch. Doch hat ein deutscher Autor und Theosoph eine Arbeit geleistet, welche wir durch seine erneute Herausgabe würdigen wollen. Franz Hartmann hat es als einziger geschafft, es so zu übersetzen, dass es für den Westen verständlich ist. Und das befürworten wir!
