This book, originally entitled An Adventure Among the Rosicrucians, was first published anonymously under the pseudonym "A Student of Occultism" in 1887, but with copyright in the name of Franz Hartmann to protect its text.
In 1910, Hartmann republished the story with a new title: With the Adepts. However, in his preface, he mentioned that it "has been gathered from notes handed to me by a friend, a writer of considerable repute."
That friend and writer was H. P. Blavatsky.

What's in a name? Very often there is more in it than the profane is prepared to understand, or the learned mystic to explain. It is an invisible, secret, but very potential influence that every name carries about with it and "leaveth wherever it goeth." Carlyle thought that "there is much, nay, almost all, in names." "Could I unfold the influence of names, which are the most important of all clothings, I were a second great Trismegistus, " he writes.

The name or title of a magazine started with a definite object, is, therefore, all important; for it is, indeed, the invisible seedgrain, which will either grow "to be an all-over-shadowing tree" on the fruits of which must depend the nature of the results brought about by the said object, or the tree will wither and die. These considerations show that the name of the present magazine-rather equivocal to orthodox Christian ears-is due to no careless selection, but arose in consequence of much thinking over its fitness, and was adopted as the best symbol to express that object and the results in view.

Now, the first and most important, if not the sole object of the magazine, is expressed in the line from the 1st Epistle to the Corinthians, on its title page. It is to bring light to "the hidden things of darkness, " (iv. 5); to show in their true aspect and their original real meaning things and names, men and their doings and customs; it is finally to fight prejudice, hypocrisy and shams in every nation, in every class of Society, as in every department of life. The task is a laborious one but it is neither impracticable nor useless, if even as an experiment.

Lucifer: A Theosophical Magazine. Volume I

The purpose of this book is exactly expressed in its title, "The Key to Theosophy, " and needs but few words of explanation. It is not a complete or exhaustive text-book of Theosophy, but only a key to unlock the door that leads to the deeper study. It traces the broad outlines of the Wisdom Religion, and explains its fundamental principles; meeting, at the same time, the various objections raised by the average Western enquirer, and endeavouring to present unfamiliar concepts in a form as simple and in language as clear as possible.

The Key to Theosophy

By day, bathed in the hot rays of the sun, its tall minaret-like outline looks like a block of ice against the blue sky. By night, with the aid of the intense, phosphorescent moonlight proper to India, it is still more dazzling and poetical. The summit looks as if it were covered with freshly fallen snow-crystals. Raising its slender profile above the dark background of bushes, it suggests some pure midnight apparition, soaring over this silent abode of destruction and lamenting what will never return. Side by side with these cemeteries rise the Hindu ghats, generally by the river bank. There really is something grand in the ritual of burning the dead. Witnessing this ceremony the spectator is struck with the deep philosophy underlying the fundamental idea of this custom. In the course of an hour nothing remains of the body but a few handfuls of ashes. A professional Brahman, like a priest of death, scatters these ashes to the winds over a river. The ashes of what once lived and felt, loved and hated, rejoiced and wept, are thus given back again to the four elements: to Earth, which fed it during such a long time and out of which it grew and developed; to Fire, emblem of purity, that has just devoured the body in order that the spirit may be rid of everything impure, and may freely gravitate to the new sphere of posthumous existence, where every sin is a stumbling block on the way to "Moksha, " or infinite bliss; to Air, which it inhaled and through which it lived, and to Water, which purified it physically and spiritually, and is now to receive its ashes into her pure bosom.

"It was a dark, chilly night in September, 1884. A heavy gloom had descended over the streets of A., a small town on the Rhine, and was hanging like a black funeral-pall over the dull factory burgh. The greater number of its inhabitants, wearied by their long day's work, had hours before retired to stretch their tired limbs, and lay their aching heads upon their pillows. All was quiet in the large house; all was quiet in the deserted streets. I too was lying in my bed; alas, not one of rest, but of pain and sickness, to which I had been confined for some days. So still was everything in the house, that, as Longfellow has it, its stillness seemed almost audible. I could plainly hear the murmur of the blood, as it rushed through my aching body, producing that monotonous singing so familiar to one who lends a watchful ear to silence. I had listened to it until, in my nervous imagination, it had grown into the sound of a distant cataract, the fall of mighty waters ... when, suddenly changing its character, the ever growing "singing" merged into other and far more welcome sounds. It was the low, and at first scarce audible, whisper of a human voice. It approached, and gradually strengthening seemed to speak in my very ear. Thus sounds a voice speaking across a blue quiescent lake, in one of those wondrously acoustic gorges of the snow-capped mountains, where the air is so pure that a word pronounced half a mile off seems almost at the elbow. Yes; it was the voice of one whom to know is to reverence; of one, to me, owing to many mystic associations, most dear and holy; a voice familiar for long years and ever welcome: doubly so in hours of mental or physical suffering, for it always brings with it a ray of hope and consolation..."

Blavatsky's Nightmare Tales

La vraie science n'a pas de croyance", dit le Dr Fenwick dans l'"Histoire étrange" de Bulwer-Lytton ; "la vraie science ne connaît que trois états d'esprit : la négation, la conviction et le vaste intervalle entre les deux, qui n'est pas la croyance, mais la suspension du jugement". Telle était peut-être la vraie science à l'époque du Dr Fenwick. Mais la vraie science de nos temps modernes procède autrement ; soit elle nie catégoriquement, sans aucune investigation préliminaire, soit elle reste dans l'intervalle, entre la négation et la conviction, et, dictionnaire en main, invente de nouvelles appellations gréco-latines pour des types d'hystérie inexistants !

Le ridicule est l'arme la plus meurtrière de l'époque.

Le temps n'est qu'une illusion produite par la succession de nos états de conscience alors que nous voyageons à travers la durée éternelle, et il n'existe pas en cas de conscience dans laquelle l'illusion peut être produite; Mais "se couche".

Avez-vous à l'écoute de la souffrance de l'humanité, candidat à la lumière?

Tout dans l'univers, dans tous ses royaumes, est conscient: c'est-à-dire doté d'une conscience de son propre espèce et sur son propre plan de perception.

La théosophie, sur terre, est comme le rayon blanc du spectre, et chaque religion d'une seule des sept couleurs.

Chacune des innombrables religions et sectes religieuses considère la divinité à sa propre manière; Et, en se terminant sur l'inconnu ses propres spéculations, il applique ces excroissances purement humaines de l'imagination surchauffée sur les masses ignorantes, et les appelle «révélation». Comme les dogmes de chaque religion et secte diffèrent souvent radicalement, ils ne peuvent pas être vrais. Et si faux, qu'est-ce qu'ils sont?

L'endurance est le compagnon libre de la douleur et la patience de son maître.

Nous devons préparer et étudier la vérité sous tous les aspects, s'efforçant de ne rien ignorer, si nous ne voulons pas tomber dans l'abîme de l'inconnu quand l'heure frappera.

Combien de temps devons-nous être retournés comme tant de boucs émissaires aux incroyants, en trompant les médiums et en spéculant des prophètes?

Lucifer représente la vie, cependant, le progrès, la civilisation, la liberté, l'indépendance. Lucifer est le logos, le serpent, le Sauveur.

Les vérités possibles, dangereusement perçues dans le monde de l'abstraction, comme celles déduites de l'observation et de l'expérience dans le monde de la matière, sont contraints aux multitudes profanes, trop occupées pour penser par elles-mêmes, sous la forme d'une révélation divine et d'une autorité scientifique. Mais la même question est ouverte à l'époque de Socrate et de Pilate à notre propre âge de négation en gros: y a-t-il une chose de la vérité absolue entre les mains d'une partie ou d'un homme?

Je parle "avec certitude absolue" seulement en ce qui concerne ma conviction personnelle. Ceux qui n'ont pas le même mandat pour leur croyance que moi seraient très crédules et stupides de l'accepter sur la foi aveugle. L'écrivain ne croit pas non plus que son correspondant et ses amis dans une "autorité" et encore moins "révélation divine"!

C'est une loi occulte en outre, qu'aucun homme ne peut se lever supérieur à ses défaillances individuelles sans soulever, que ce soit si peu si peu, le corps entier dont il fait partie intégrante. De la même manière, personne ne peut pécher, ni subir les effets du péché, seuls. En réalité, il n'y a pas de «séparation» et de l'approche la plus proche de cet état égoïste que les lois de la vie permettent dans l'intention ou le motif.

Plus tu avançons, plus tes pieds de pied se réuniront.

La connaissance augmente proportionnellement à son utilisation; Autrement dit, plus nous en enseignons, plus nous apprenons.

La patience mène au pouvoir; Mais l'empressement dans la cupidité entraîne une perte.

Le monde n'est pas encore préparé à comprendre la philosophie des sciences occultes - laissez-les tout d'abord qu'il y a des êtres dans un monde invisible, que ce soit des «esprits» des morts ou des élémentaires; et qu'il y a des pouvoirs cachés chez l'homme, qui sont capables de faire un dieu de lui sur terre.

Dogme? Foi? Ce sont les piliers à droite et à gauche de chaque théologie qui se fraye un coup d'âme. Les théosophiques n'ont pas de dogmes, pas exacts de foi aveugle.

Mais - entraîner des préjugés avec un pitch-fork qu'il reviendra jamais.

Les chrétiens ont été les premiers à faire de l'existence de Satan un dogme de l'Église. Quelle est l'utilisation dans un pape s'il n'y a pas de diable?

Un ascète solitaire est le symbole de l'égoïsme le plus lâche ; un ermite qui fuit ses frères au lieu de les aider à porter le fardeau de la vie, à travailler pour les autres et à mettre les épaules à la roue de la vie sociale, est un lâche qui se cache quand la bataille est engagée et va à dormir ivre d'un opiacé.

Peu de gens dévots du suspect du Vatican, lorsqu'ils soulèvent les yeux dans l'adoration muette sur la tête de leur Dieu sur Terre, le Pape, que ce qu'ils admirent, est après tout, mais la caricature, l'Amazon- Comme le casque de Pallas Athene, la déesse païenne Minerva! En fait, il n'y a à peine un rite ou une cérémonie de l'Église chrétienne qui ne descend pas d'occultisme.

Le grattage d'une bernacle est-il la destruction d'un navire?

J'ai promis ma parole pour aider les gens à la vérité tout en vivant et - je tiens ma parole. Laissez-les abuser et me réviser. Laissez certains m'appeler un médium, un spiritualiste et d'autres un imposteur. La journée viendra où la postérité apprendra à mieux me connaître.

Si tu aurais ce flux de connaissances durement approuvées, de sagesse née par le ciel, de rester douceur des eaux, tu ne devrais pas la laisser devenir un étang stagnant.
