Je me suis toujours senti un peu dur en Angleterre - vous savez, j'ai gagné le Bisto trois fois en Irlande, mais j'ai eu l'impression que personne n'avait entendu parler de moi dans mon pays d'origine.

Les écrivains veulent de la publicité tout le temps, et ils harcèlent toujours leurs agents et leurs éditeurs pour leur donner plus de publicité, mais, quand vous l'obtenez, c'est une sorte de détroit de l'âme.

J'ai trouvé très difficile pour quelques années de faire des écrits parce que tout ce que je voulais faire était de jouer le violon. Dès la minute où je l'ai repris, je ne pouvais tout simplement pas le déposer.

S'il y a un fil conducteur à mes livres, c'est que chacun implique le voyage d'un individu. L'individu doit rester fidèle à eux-mêmes.

Ce que j'ai tendance à obtenir d'Amérique, ce sont des lettres très enthousiastes et un e-mail des bibliothécaires et des enseignants, les gardiens, bien que j'hésite à utiliser ce mot. Je n'ai jamais été un énorme vendeur.

Ma mère n'aurait pas eu de temps pour des trucs fantastiques; Elle est plus pratique.

Je n'étais pas si dérangé avec l'école; J'étais trop en colère aux chevaux. Mais j'ai aimé lire et j'étais assez bon en anglais et j'ai toujours aimé la musique.

Je trouve très difficile de dire non quand je suis en Irlande. Vous finissez par faire beaucoup d'événements et de choses et ne pas faire de travail, et ce n'est pas seulement une question d'heures au bureau.

Mon premier livre était un roman pour adultes, «Down Parmi the Gods», publié par Virago, et j'ai également écrit des poèmes, un mince volume de poésie.

La mythologie irlandaise est magnifique, tout comme les fées, mais elles sont très déformées au Royaume-Uni. Ce ne sont pas de petites créatures avec des ailes.

Je suis venu à écrire parce que j'ai rejoint l'atelier des écrivains de North Clare, qui se réunissait chaque semaine à la bibliothèque Ennistymon.

Ce que je trouve extrêmement gratifiant, ce sont les critiques que mes livres reçoivent de la presse américaine. Ils sont tellement sur le ballon par rapport à n'importe où ailleurs. C'est tellement satisfaisant d'obtenir une revue qui transmet le lecteur compris précisément ce que j'essayais d'y arriver.

Si j'ai une chose en une semaine, je trouve très difficile de retourner au travail cette semaine. J'ai besoin de beaucoup de temps de rêve.
