With the series Schott aims to provide an overview of its activities for scientists, engineer and managers from all branches of industry world-wide where glass and glass ceramics are of interest. Each volume begins with a chapter providing a general idea of the current problems, results, and trends to the subject treated. This volume lays the foundations for:
- quantitative chemical analysis and structure determination of glasses and glass ceramics;
- prediction of properties in the development of new materials;
- Supervision of production processes, including raw materials, evaporation from the melt, exhaust gases, and environmental concerns;
- troubleshooting in the case of glass defects in combination with research for the design of faultless (in the PPM range) or at least high-yield processes;
- understanding the origin of customer complaints
because of unfulfilled expectations concerning material properties or product behaviour.
The book is conceived as a monograph. The individual chapters, however, are written by leading experts on the corresponding subjects. Many figures, tables, and examples are chosen to introduce the reader to the practice of chemical analysis, structure identification, and interpretation of the vitreous state.

This volume gives background knowledge on the electrochemical behaviour of glass melts and solid glasses. Redox and ion-transfer processes, which are responsible for many phenomena observed in glass during processing or in its daily use, are extensively treated.
Practical examples provide the reader with facts for studying the various electrochemical aspects of the behaviour of ion-conducting materials. Among these are: mechanisms responsible for glass corrosion; fundamentals and the application of glass electrodes for pH measurements, complemented by information about the ongoing redefinition by IUPAC; field-driven ion exchange at glass surfaces or within electrochromic thin-film systems; fining during production processes; interface reactions and thermodynamic equilibria of glass melts with refractories or the surrounding atmosphere.
The book is written by experts from the Schott R & D department and their external partners in research.
