Far and away : drawings from the Clement C. Moore Collection

This elegant publication presents for the first time the Eveillard Gift of drawings to the Morgan Library & Museum. It accompanies an exhibition at the Morgan and includes a catalogue of the works with entries by drawings experts. The Morgan celebrates the 100th year of its founding with a series of exhibitions devoted to promised gifts to the museum, including 28 drawings from the holdings of New York-based collectors Jean-Marie and Elizabeth Eveillard, which will be on view during the summer of 2024. The selection comprises drawings from the seventeenth to the twentieth century, and includes a rare compositional study for Rembrandt's first painting, Greuze's virtuoso depiction of a young cook made for his friend Georges Wille, Delacroix's intimate portrait of his confidante and caretaker Jenny Le Guillou, and a spectacular nude by Bonnard. Also in the gift are significant sheets-many rarely seen-by major artists including Rubens, Guercino, Watteau, Constable, Seurat, Cezanne, and Vuillard, among others. In fully illustrated entries, drawing specialists explore the creation and context for each sheet, considering the artist's choices and the ways in which drawing liberated the imagination in these exploratory studies.

Liberty to the Imagination - Drawings from the Eveillard Gift

For nearly a century, members of three generations of the Bibiena family were the most highly sought theater designers in Europe. Their elaborate stage designs were used for operas, festivals, and courtly performances across Europe : from their native Italy to cites as far afi eld as Vienna, Prague, Stockholm, St. Petersburg, and Lisbon. Beyond these performances, the distinctive Bibiena style survives through their remarkable drawings. Architecture, Theater, and Fantasy marks the promised gift to the Morgan Library & Museum of a group of Bibiena drawings from the collection of Jules Fisher, the Tony Award-winning lighting designer, and commemorates an exhibition of these works, the fi rst in the United States in over thirty years to celebrate these talented draftsmen. These drawings demonstrate the range of the Bibienas' output, from energetic sketches to highly fi nished watercolors. With representations of imagined palace interiors and lavish illusionistic architecture, this group of drawings highlights the visual splendor of the Baroque stage. The catalogue opens with Diane Kelder's introductory essay about the Bibiena family. Laurel Peterson then discusses the Bibienas as draftsmen, underscoring the drawings from the Fisher collection. Arnold Aronson, in turn, explores the family's contribution to the theater, setting them within a history of European stage design and explaining the signifi cance of the dynamic angled perspective of their scena per angolo sets. John Marciari's essay considers the Fisher gift among the many Bibiena drawings already at the Morgan, mainly from the Oenslager collection, and looks at the collecting of Bibiena drawings more generally. Finally, Diane Kelder's checklist off ers information regarding the attribution and provenance of the works in the exhibition.

Architecture, Theater, and Fantasy - Bibiena Drawings from the Jules Fisher Collection

Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (1591-1666), known as Guercino, was arguably the most interesting and diverse draftsman of the Italian Baroque era, a natural virtuoso who created brilliant drawings in a broad range of media. Accompanying an exhibition at the Morgan, which owns more than thirty-five works by the artist, Guercino ; Virtuoso Draftsman offers an overview of the artist's graphic work. Selections range from early genre scenes and caricatures to dense and dynamic studies for paintings, to refined chalk drawings and landscapes that were ends in themselves.

Jacopo Tintoretto (1518/19-1594) was among the most distinctive artists of the Italian Renaissance. Yet, although his bold paintings are immediately recognizable, his drawings remain unfamiliar even to many scholars. Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Morgan Library & Museum, New York, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, Drawing in Tintoretto's Venice offers a complete overview of Tintoretto as a draftsman, illuminating his sources as well as his originality, and exploring the historiographical and critical questions that have framed all previous discussion of Tintoretto's graphic work.
