Ancré dans l'Angleterre des années 1970, ce roman satirique de Michael Bracewell ne met pas en scène des hippies libertaires, mais des adolescents de la banlieue chic londonienne, seulement préoccupés par leurs sentiments. Il a étudié à l'université de Nottingham, puis travaillé un temps pour le British Council. Romancier (trois de ses romans ont paru en France où ils ont été très remarqués : Une époque formidable, Le Dilettante, 2002 ; Saint Rachel, Le Dilettante, 2004 ; Un éternel jeune homme, Phébus, 2007), Michael Bracewell a également publié des essais (sur l'histoire culturelle de son pays, sur l'art contemporain, sur le groupe Roxy Music...) et réalisé un documentaire sur Oscar Wilde pour la BBC.
