In the scientific field, Augustin Fresnel, a young graduate from the Ecole Polytechnique, demonstrated, with the help of his friends André-Marie Ampère and François Arago, that light was made up of waves rather than particles, a theory that ran counter to Newton and all the scientists of the time.

The fact that these scientific and pictorial revolutions occurred at the same time - a phenomenon that, to our knowledge, has never previously been explored by art historians - is troubling. Through the prism of Augustin Fresnel, we find many fascinating examples of the wave character of light in Impressionist painting, the master of which was Monet. Aspects of undulation and diffraction stand out. But how can we explain the fifty year period separating the discovery of the wave-like nature of light and the port of Le Havre depicted in Monet's Impression, Sunrise (1872), considered the first Impressionist painting ?

We attempted to reply to this question by gathering together art historians, artists and physicists at a conference organised by the Louvre and the Ecole Polytechnique, two establishments founded during the French Revolution.

1820 : la peinture amorce une transformation profonde. Le dessin devient moins représentatif de la réalité et ne prime plus sur la couleur. Le détail devient moins important et, surtout, la lumière vibre, devient reine et annonce l'impressionnisme. En science, un jeune polytechnicien, Augustin Fresnel, avec l'aide de ses amis Jean-Marie Ampère et François Arago, démontre que la lumière est ondulatoire et non corpusculaire, comme le soutiennent Newton et tous les savants de l'époque. La coïncidence entre ces deux révolutions scientifique et picturale, jamais évoquée à notre connaissance dans les ouvrages d'histoire de l'art, est troublante. Il est intéressant de trouver, au prisme de Fresnel, la lumière ondulatoire dans les oeuvres impressionnistes dont le maître est Monet. Les aspects d'ondulation et de diffraction y sont manifestes. Mais comment expliquer les cinquante années qui séparent la découverte de la nature ondulatoire de la lumière et le port du Havre Impression, soleil levant de 1874, considéré comme la première oeuvre impressionniste ? Nous avons essayé de répondre à cette question en réunissant historiens d'art, artistes et physiciens, dans un colloque organisé par le Louvre et l'Ecole polytechnique, deux établissements fondés par la Révolution française.

Lorsque à l'âge de quatre-vingts ans, au terme d'une vie de lecture et de relecture du Roland furieux, Voltaire rend hommage aux qualités suprêmement "picturales" de l'Arioste, il ne fait que confirmer le résultat de plusieurs siècles de fécondation des arts par le chef-d'oeuvre de la littérature ferraraise. La peinture, la sculpture, mais aussi le théâtre, l'opéra, les ballets, les jardins et jusqu'à l'art populaire, se sont inspirés du poème épique le plus parfait de la Renaissance italienne pour produire de nouvelles oeuvres, capables pour certaines de rivaliser avec leur modèle. Et cependant, quelques décennies plus tard, c'est une observation opposée que Delacroix consigne dans son journal : "L'Arioste peint tellement avec les moyens de son art, il abuse si peu du pittoresque, de la description interminable qu'on ne peut rien lui dérober". C'est là le paradoxe que les nombreux auteurs de ce volume explorent et illustrent : les relations complexes nouées par l'Arioste avec les arts, puis par les arts avec le Roland furieux, de Dosso Dossi à Molière en passant par Francesco Xanto Avelli, avec, en leur centre, la perfection faite poésie.
