The Eastern Desert of Egypt extends over a vast area of mountains and sandy plains between the Nile and the Red Sea. Its natural riches -gold, gems and high quality stones (such as granite from Mons Claudianus, Tiberianè or Ophiatès, porphyry from Porphyritès, basanites [greywacke] from the Wâdi al-Hammâmât, etc.)- have, despite the difficulties due to harsh climatic conditions, been exploited since the Predynastic period. The Pharaohs, the Ptolemies and the Roman emperors often sent expeditions to extract these minerals and stones. The desert was also a passageway for all sorts of traffic coming from countries bordering the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. Expeditions and commercial activities, which started from time of the Old Kingdom, greatly expanded during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. Trade focused on spices initially, fragrant resins and gems, then in the Roman period, on a wide range of exotic products including pearls, precious stones, fabrics, etc. The archaeological sites of this region were practically inaccessible for logistical reasons until recently and they were, until now, exceptionally well preserved. Between the late 1970's and 2012, American, English, Italian and French teams were able to explore or search hundreds of sites, significantly improving our understanding of gold mining under the Ptolemies and the Byzantine emperors, granite and porphyry quarries opened by the Roman emperors, and trade with Arabia and India through the ports of Myos Hormos and Berenike...

The Eastern Desert of Egypt during the Greco-Roman Period: Archaeological Reports

Le désert Oriental d'Égypte occupe une vaste étendue de montagnes et de plaines sablonneuses entre le Nil et la mer Rouge. Ses richesses naturelles - or, gemmes et pierres de grande qualité (granite du Mons Claudianus, de Tiberianè ou de l'Ophiades, porphyre du Porphyritès, basanites [Grauwacke], etc.) - ont, malgré les difficultés dues aux dures conditions climatiques, été exploitées dès l'époque prédynastique. Les pharaons, les Ptolémées, puis les empereurs romains y ont fréquemment envoyé des expéditions pour extraire ces minerais et ces pierres. Le désert était aussi la voie de passage obligé pour tous les trafics avec les contrées bordant la mer Rouge et l'Océan Indien. Expéditions et entreprises commerciales commencées dès l'Ancien Empire, connurent une grande expansion à partir de l'époque ptolémaïque. Le commerce porta d'abord sur les épices, les résines odorantes et les gemmes, puis à l'époque romaine, sur une large palette de produits exotiques incluant aussi des perles, des pierres précieuses, des étoffes, etc. Les sites archéologiques de cette région pratiquement inaccessibles pour des raisons logistiques étaient restés, jusqu'à très récemment, dans un état de conservation exceptionnel. Entre la fin des années 1970 et 2012, des équipes américaines, anglaises, italiennes et françaises ont ainsi pu prospecter ou fouiller des centaines de sites dont l'exploration a fait considérablement avancer nos connaissances sur l'exploitation de l'or sous les Ptolémées et les empereurs byzantins, sur les carrières de granite et de porphyre ouvertes par les empereurs romains et sur le commerce avec l'Arabie et l'Inde à travers les ports de Myos Hormos et de Bérénice...
