Une île est un espace particulier, où les apparences peuvent être trompeuses et le meurtre d'une femme ne pas relever du banal fait divers. Le voyage de Nikki Black vers l'île d'Aysaar n'a rien d'un classique retour aux sources et aux racines familiales. II en est au contraire une version antithétique, dans le registre de l'humour noir et du tragi-comique, voire du tragique puisque ce qui aurait pu être une simple quête des racines est motivé par l'idée fixe de Nikki : tuer sa mère, qui l'a abandonnée à sa naissance 29 ans plus tôt. La rencontre d'un demi-frère, Calum, dont elle ignorait l'existence, va tout changer, et l'aventure insulaire revêtir dès lors la forme d'un roman d'initiation tandis que l'inclusion dans le récit des histoires et légendes racontées par Calum relie Une île à toute une tradition de contes et de mythes, celtiques et autres, et lui donne ainsi une dimension qui transcende l'anecdotique malgré un ancrage très visiblement contemporain. De même que certaines références précises au contexte social et historique de la fin du XXe siècle, la langue du roman, en particulier dans les dialogues, l'inscrit en effet ostensiblement dans l'époque actuelle. La traduction est accompagnée de notes car un contexte contemporain peut, tout autant que le passé, nécessiter des éclaircissements pour un lecteur étranger auquel ce contexte n'est pas toujours familier. Cette traduction est suivie de quelques réflexions sur le roman de Jane Rogers, esquisse d'analyse d'un texte dont la très grande richesse ne tient pas uniquement, loin s'en faut, au fait que l'on y puisse lire, par un paradoxe qui n'est qu'apparent, un hommage appuyé à La Tempête et, au-delà, à l'écriture dramaturgique de Shakespeare.
