Tous les ans au mois de décembre, les Juifs célèbrent Hanouka, la fête des Lumières. Ils commémorent le miracle de l'huile, qui eut lieu à Jérusalem il y a plus de deux mille ans.
Le peuple juif venait de remporter une bataille menée contre les Romains pour défendre sa liberté. Lors de l'inauguration du Temple après la victoire, il n'y avait plus d'huile pure pour allumer la Ménorah, le candélabre à sept branches. Les Cohanim fouillèrent le Temple de fond en comble et ne trouvèrent qu'une petite fiole d'huile ; alors qu'il en restait à peine assez pour une journée, la lampe brûla huit jours, soit le temps nécessaire à la confection d'une nouvelle huile.

C'est pourquoi la fête de Hanouka dure huit jours. Chaque soir à la tombée de la nuit, toute la famille se réunit autour d'une ménorah à neuf branches, appelée hanoukia, et récite des bénédictions.
