Roger Ballen (b. 1950) is one of the most important and original art photographers working today. Best known for his probing, often challenging images that exist in a space between painting, drawing, installation and photography, he has achieved global recognition with a series of startling monographs and exhibitions spanning some five decades. The artist's only comprehensive retrospective, Ballenesque takes the reader on a visual, chronological tour of the photographer's entire oeuvre. Rien n'est mis en scène. Et rien n'est déjà là. Tout est transformé par la caméra.

Les images sont d'une culture psychologique, d'une culture jungienne, si vous voulez. Il émane de ma propre psyché ... c'est un endroit difficile à atteindre, honnêtement. Il m'a fallu de nombreuses années pour me rendre à cet endroit et le définir visuellement.

Le noir et blanc est essentiellement une façon abstraite d'interpréter et de transformer ce que l'on pourrait appeler la réalité. Mon but de prendre des photos au cours des quarante dernières années a finalement été de me définir. Il s'agit fondamentalement d'un voyage psychologique et existentiel.

[Mon] objectif en tant qu'artiste est de créer des images de plus en plus complexes avec une clarté de forme et une intensité de vision de plus en plus grandes.

Mes meilleures photos sont celles que je ne comprends pas.

Je ne prépare jamais un discours. Je ne pense jamais que lorsque je prononce un discours, sauf pour "Ne vous embarrassez pas ou les autres", ce qui signifie "Souvenez-vous des noms des personnes que vous devez remercier".

Je crois que les photographies les plus difficiles sont celles qui créent une tension entre ce que nous appelons le réel et l'imaginative.

Le noir et blanc est une forme d'art très minimaliste et, contrairement aux photographies en couleur, ne prétend pas imiter le monde d'une manière similaire à la façon dont l'œil humain pourrait percevoir ... Le noir et blanc est essentiellement une façon abstraite d'interpréter et de transformer ce que l'on pourrait se référer à la réalité.

Je ne pense jamais à une photo avant de le commencer. J'essaie de laisser mon esprit se détendre, puis quand j'y arrive, je le fais.

En fin de compte, je crois que l'influence la plus importante sur mon esthétique a été les photographies que j'ai prises.

La vie sur la planète et dans notre galaxie est si complexe, j'espère avoir un effet substantiel, mais si je peux toucher quelques personnes au plus profondé suis très heureux.

[La photographie] vous dit que chaque seconde dans le temps est différente de toutes les autres secondes. Vous voulez que les gens comprennent que l'image devant eux a quelque chose à voir avec la vérité et qu'elle ne peut jamais être répétée.
