Cette bande dessinée considérée comme faisant partie des oeuvres mondiales majeures en ce domaine a été publiée d'octobre 1905 à avril 1911 dans le quotidien New York Herald sous le nom de Little Nemo in Slumberland. Winsor McCay est alors au sommet de son art et il développe un univers radicalement avant-gardiste où se mêlent pays des songes hantés par les lectures de Freud, bestiaire fantastique, architectures utopiques inspirées par l'Art Nouveau, libertés narratives, audaces graphiques et mise en page résolument novatrice. Although a comic strip, Little Nemo is far from a simple children's fantasy; it is often dark, surreal, threatening, and even violent. The original set-up of the comic revolved around the nightly dreams of a little boy named Nemo (meaning "nobody" in Latin). The purpose of his early dreams was to reach 'Slumberland', the realm of King Morpheus, who wanted him as a playmate for his daughter, Princess Camille. The last panel in each strip was always one of Nemo waking up, usually in or near his bed, and often being scolded (or comforted) by one of the grownups of the household after crying out in his sleep and waking them. In the earliest strips, the dream event that woke him up would always be some mishap or disaster that seemed about to lead to serious injury or death, such as being crushed by giant mushrooms, being turned into a monkey, falling from a bridge being held up by slaves, or gaining 90 years in age. Later on, when Nemo finally did reach Slumberland, he was constantly being woken up by Flip, a character who originally wore a hat that had 'Wake Up' written on it. Flip would go on to be one of the comic's seminal characters. Other notable recurring characters included: Dr. Pill, The Imp, the Candy Kid and Santa Claus as well as the Princess and King Morpheus. Certain episodes of the strip are particularly famous. These include the Night of the Living Houses wherein Nemo and a friend are chased down a city street by a gang of tenement houses on legs; the Walking Bed, in which Nemo and Flip ride over the rooftops on the increasingly long limbs of Nemo's bed; and the Befuddle Hall sequence, wherein Nemo and his friends attempt to find their way out of a funhouse environment of a Beaux-Arts interior turned topsy-turvy. McCay's mastery of perspective, and the extreme elegance of his line work, make his visions graphically wondrous.

L'animation devrait être un art… ce que vous autres en avez fait, en faire un métier… pas un art, mais un métier… pas de chance.

Tout idiot qui veut faire quelques milliers de dessins pour cent pieds de film est le bienvenu pour rejoindre le club.

J'espère et rêver que le moment viendra lorsque des artistes sérieux feront des images merveilleuses qui adoreront et vivront à la vie et seront beaucoup plus intéressantes et merveilleuses que les images que vous voyez maintenant sur toile. Je pense que si Michel-Ange était en vie aujourd'hui, il verrait immédiatement les merveilles ... L'artiste peut faire vivre ses scènes et ses personnages au lieu de rester immobile sur toile dans les musées d'art.

Le principal facteur de mon succès a été un désir absolu de dessiner constamment. Je n'ai jamais décidé d'être artiste. Simplement, je ne pouvais pas m'empêcher de dessiner. J'ai dessiné pour mon propre plaisir. Je n'ai jamais voulu savoir si quelqu'un aimait ou non mes dessins. Je n'ai jamais gardé un de mes dessins. Je me suis dessiné sur les murs, le tableau noir de l'école, les morceaux de papier étranges, les murs des granges. Aujourd'hui, j'aime toujours les dessins que quand j'étais enfant - et c'était il y a longtemps - mais, surprenant que cela puisse paraître, je n'ai jamais pensé à l'argent que je recevrais pour mes dessins. Je les ai simplement dessinés.

Trois Écossais du clan McKay cherchaient un quatrième membre pour combattre quatre membres du clan irlandais Magee ... «Je ne suis pas un de vous», a souligné mon père. «Tu vois, je suis l'un des clan m-c-c-a-y. Et c'est ainsi que j'ai obtenu mon nom et mon sens de l'humour.
