Ah ! Si les sorcières portaient vraiment de grandes robes noires, des chapeaux pointus, une verrue sur le nez et qu'elles se promenaient sur des balais magiques, les choses seraient tellement plus simples ! La réalité est beaucoup moins folklorique et beaucoup plus inquiétante, Roald Dahl nous l'apprend : les sorcières sont pratiquement impossibles à identifier dans une foule. Seuls de petits signes peuvent les trahir et il vaut mieux les connaître, car les sorcières n'ont qu'un but : éliminer les enfants qu'elles détestent ! Lorsque notre jeune héros se retrouve bien malgré lui caché dans une pièce où les sorcières tiennent leur congrès annuel, les choses risquent de mal tourner... On s'amuse vraiment beaucoup à suivre les tribulations de ce petit garçon et de sa grand-mère, bien décidés à lutter contre ces vilaines femmes qui ne rêvent que de transformer tous les enfants en souris. De frissons en éclats de rire, on leur emboîte le pas, tenu en haleine par un vrai suspense. Où l'on retrouve toute la fantaisie de Roald Dahl dans l'un de ses sujets favoris : les grandes personnes n'aiment pas forcément les enfants, mais ne sont pas toujours les plus fortes.
