ABOUT THE AUTHORGeorge Orwell, the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair, was a renowned English writer and essayist. Born on June 25, 1903, in Motihari, India, he is best known for his literary contributions that challenged totalitarianism and explored the consequences of oppressive government systems. Orwell's early life included experiences as an imperial police officer in Burma, which profoundly influenced his views on British imperialism. His first notable work, "Down and Out in Paris and London", was published in 1933, recounting his experiences among the working class and homeless. However, it was Orwell's dystopian novels that catapulted him to literary fame. "Animal Farm, " published in 1945, is a satirical allegory that critiques the Russian Revolution and the rise of Stalinism. In 1949, he released his magnum opus, "Nineteen Eighty-Four, " which portrayed a nightmarish future under a totalitarian regime, coining terms like "Big Brother" and "thoughtcrime" that have become part of popular culture. Orwell's writing style is marked by its clarity and social commentary. He was a passionate advocate for truth and freedom of expression, which is evident in his essays like "Politics and the English Language."Sadly, Orwell's life was cut short by tuberculosis, and he passed away on January 21, 1950, at the age of 46. His works remain not only literary classics but also influential critiques of authoritarianism and the dangers of propaganda, ensuring his enduring legacy in the world of literature and political thought.

Un certain 21 juin eut lieu en Angleterre la révolte des animaux. Les cochons dirigent le nouveau régime. Snowball et Napoléon, cochons en chef, affichent un règlement : "Tout ce qui est sur deux jambes est un ennemi. Tout ce qui est sur quatre jambes ou possède des ailes est un ami. Aucun animal ne portera de vêtements. Aucun animal ne dormira dans un lit. Aucun animal ne boira d'alcool. Aucun animal ne tuera un autre animal. Tous les animaux sont égaux." Le temps passe. La pluie efface les commandements. L'âne, un cynique, arrive encore à déchiffrer : "Tous les animaux sont égaux, mais (il semble que cela ait été rajouté) il y en a qui le sont plus que d'autres." Le "Grenier des acteurs" est un moment à part dans la programmation de la Comédie-Française : à tour de rôle, sous les toits de la Salle Richelieu, les acteurs de la Troupe proposent une lecture publique de leur livre de chevet. Insurance salesman George "Fatty" Bowling lives with his humorless wife and their two irritating children in a dull house in a tract development in the historyless London suburb of West Bletchley. The year is 1938; doomsayers are declaring that England will be at war again by 1941. When George bets on an unlikely horse and wins, he finds himself with a little extra cash on his hands. What should he spend it on? "The alternatives, it seemed to me, were either a week-end with a woman or dribbling it quietly away on odds and ends such as cigars and double whiskeys." But a chance encounter with a poster in Charing Cross sets him off on a tremendous journey into his own memories--memories, especially, of a boyhood spent in Lower Binfield, the country village where he grew up. His recollections are pungent and detailed. Touch by touch, he paints for us a whole world that is already nearly lost: a world not yet ruled by the fear of war and not yet blighted by war's aftermath:  1913! My God! 1913! The stillness, the green water, the rushing of the weir! It'll never come again. I don't mean that 1913 will never come again. I mean the feeling inside you, the feeling of not being in a hurry and not being frightened, the feeling you've either had and don't need to be told about, or haven't had and won't ever have the chance to learn.  Alas, George finds that even Lower Binfield has been darkened by the bomber's shadow. Seulement, s'en est trop, et se lance dans une véritable course vers la mort contre l'illusoire Big Brother...

Bien connu pour ses romans salués comme des classiques, 1984 et La Ferme des animaux, George Orwell est aussi un essayiste hors pair. Dans ces textes d'intervention s'expriment toute son attention et toute son humanité. Sa capacité de vision continue d'inspirer notre présent et notre avenir. Nul doute que ce précieux recueil rassemblant ses essais les plus pertinents contribuera à éclairer sa pensée large et démocratique, interprétée par les esprits les plus divers en un temps empreint de profondes interrogations. Plus que jamais la présence d'Orwell s'inscrit dans le débat contemporain.
