The Innocents Abroad, or The New Pilgrims' Progress is a travel book by American author Mark Twain published in 1869 which humorously chronicles what Twain called his "Great Pleasure Excursion" on board the chartered vessel Quaker City (formerly USS Quaker City) through Europe and the Holy Land with a group of American travelers in 1867.

It was the best-selling of Twain's works during his lifetime, as well as one of the best-selling travel books of all time.

Twain est un homme de convictions ; c'est aussi un moraliste et un humoriste, ces deux traits de sa manière d'écrire étant indissociables. Il n'est alors pas étonnant que ce soit en humoriste qu'il s'attache à certains aspects de la chose politique, pas plus qu'il n'est étonnant que sous la verve de l'amuseur pointe et s'impose un propos qu'il ne faudrait peut-être pas prendre à la légère.
On s'attarde assez peu sur la dimension politique de l'oeuvre de Mark Twain. C'est que dans ses récits les plus connus - qu'on juge souvent et bien à tort destinés à la seule jeunesse -, la réalité politique pourtant très présente n'est qu'un des éléments du propos. Twain a été tout au long de son existence particulièrement attentif aux souffrances et aux injustices engendrées par le colonialisme, le racisme, les discriminations sociales et ethniques, et il ne s'est pas privé d'en faire état, qu'il s'agisse des questions internes de la politique des États-Unis, de l'impérialisme et de la violence infligée par les colonisateurs quels qu'ils soient. On soulignera d'ailleurs que son engagement n'a pas été que de parole et qu'une part de son existence a été, également, militante.
 
 
Un candidat à la présidence : quand un candidat se présente aux plus hautes fonctions de l'État s'engageant à rester fidèlement le salaud qu'il a toujours - preuves à l'appui - été.
 
Candidat au poste de gouverneur : quand un homme de bien qui brigue un poste de gouverneur se métamorphose, sous l'effet de la presse - et sans pouvoir rien faire - en une sorte de monstre, concentré de toutes les tares et de toutes les bassesses humaines.
 
Secrétaire particulier d'un sénateur : que reprocher à celui qui, obéissant scrupuleusement à son maître en politique, applique à la lettre ses instructions sans se donner la peine de les déguiser sous un minimum de rhétorique ?
 
Tourner sa veste : comment comprendre que si tourner sa veste en politique fait d'un homme un reptile, la tourner par deux fois puisse vous transformer en un oiseau de paradis ?
 
Oraison fictive pour un homme de parti : comment le refus de penser de ceux qui, volontairement, se font esclaves d'un parti, mène à la perte de sens.

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - (Tom Sawyer’s Comrade)

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer revolves around the youthful adventures of the novel's schoolboy protagonist, Thomas Sawyer, whose reputation precedes him for causing mischief and strife. Tom lives with his Aunt Polly, half-brother Sid, and cousin Mary in the quaint town of St. Petersburg, just off the shore of the Mississippi River. St. Petersburg is described as a typical small-town atmosphere where the Christian faith is predominant, the social network is close-knit, and familiarity resides.  Unlike his brother Sid, Tom receives "lickings" from his Aunt Polly; ever the mischief-maker, would rather play hooky than attend school and often sneaks out his bedroom window at night to adventure with his friend, Huckleberry Finn ­ the town's social outcast. Tom, despite his dread of schooling, is extremely clever and would normally get away with his pranks if Sid were not such a "tattle-tale."  As punishment for skipping school to go swimming, Aunt Polly assigns Tom the chore of whitewashing the fence surrounding the house. In a brilliant scheme, Tom is able to con the neighborhood boys into completing the chore for him, managing to convince them of the joys of whitewashing. At school, Tom is equally as flamboyant, and attracts attention by chasing other boys, yelling, and running around. With his usual antics, Tom attempts to catch the eye of Becky Thatcher, a new girl in town, and persuades her to get "engaged" by kissing him. But their romance collapses when she learns Tom has been "engaged" previously to Amy Lawrence. Shortly after Becky shuns him, he accompanies Huckleberry Finn to the graveyard at night, where they witness the murder of Dr. Robinson.Excerpt:"TOM!" No answer. "TOM!" No answer. "What's gone with that boy,  I wonder? You TOM!" No answer. The old lady pulled her spectacles down and looked over them about the room; then she put them up and looked out under them. She seldom or never looked through them for so small a thing as a boy; they were her state pair, the pride of her heart, and were built for "style," not service—she could have seen through a pair of stove-lids just as well. She looked perplexed for a moment, and then said, not fiercely, but still loud enough for the furniture to hear: "Well, I lay if I get hold of you I'll—" She did not finish, for by this time she was bending down and punching under the bed with the broom, and so she needed breath to punctuate the punches with. She resurrected nothing but the cat. "I never did see the beat of that boy!"
