Au numéro 221 de baker street, le docteur watson, ancien officier de l'armée des indes, partage un appartement avec sherlock holmes.
 Tantôt celui-ci fume l'opium ou rêve après une piqûre de morphine, tantôt il explore les gazettes du matin ; tantôt il neige à flocons épais, tantôt le brouillard envahit lentement la rue, mais on sait qu'un cab va s'arrêter, qu'un pas pressé va retentir sur les pavés, que la porte de l'appartement va s'ouvrir pour livrer passage à un inconnu, bouleversé par l'angoisse.  une nouvelle aventure va commencer dans ce domaine propre à conan doyle : la magie du rationnel.
 Parmi les héros de l'histoire littéraire, sherlock holmes a sa place auprès d'ulysse et de don quichotte.  apparemment héros de la raison, conan doyle l'enfanta en effet à la fin d'un siècle positiviste oú la science semblait s'être révélée capable de résoudre tous les problèmes cosmiques et humains.  sherlock holmes est plutôt physicien et chimiste que mathématicien ou psychologue.  alors que dupin, le détective d'edgar p?, raisonne intuitivement en se mettant à la place de l'autre, que rouletabille, le détective de gaston leroux, cherche abstraitement " le bon bout de la raison ", sherlock holmes déduit le passé d'un inconnu à une certaine usure de sa canne, du boîtier de sa montre, de ses semelles ou de son haut-de-forme, et le passage clandestin d'un coupable ou d'une victime, aussitôt identifié, à des cendres de cigarette ou au déplacement d'une pendule.
 Mais sherlock holmes n'est pas que robot génial, car conan doyle est un romancier.  le mystère initial, l'émotion qu'il inspire, le démenti qu'il semble souvent porter à la raison, l'angoisse qui en résulte, la menace qui subsiste multipliée par les péripéties, tout conspire à produire une électricité poétique qui persiste lorsque, à la fin, la lumière plus banale de la raison triomphante vient remettre le monde en ordre.
