Elle a reçu très peu d'instruction en Syrie, mais a appris l'anglais toute seule en regardant les séries américaines à la télévision. En 2014, la ville de Kobané, où elle habitait, s'est trouvée au coeur de violents combats entre le groupe Etat islamique et les forces kurdes, soutenues par les Etats-Unis. La famille Mustafa a dû alors fuir vers la Turquie puis vers l'Europe, en Allemagne où ils sont aujourd'hui installés.  Christina Lamb a co-écrit le best-seller Moi, Malala (Calmann-Lévy).
Diplômée d'Oxford et de Harvard, elle est l'auteur de plusieurs ouvrages et a reçu de nombreux de prix pour son travail de grand reporter, dont celui de meilleur correspondant étranger britannique à cinq reprises, ainsi que le prix Bayeux, qui récompense le meilleur correspondant de guerre européen.

Nujeen has cerebral palsy and cannot walk. This did not stop her braving inconceivable odds to travel in her wheelchair from Syria in search of a new life. Nujeen recounts the details of her childhood and disability, as well as the specifics of her harrowing journey across the Mediterranean to Greece and finally to Germany to seek an education and the medical treatment she needs.

She has won numerous awards, including being named Foreign Correspondent of the Year a remarkable four times.

 'Small Wars Permitting' is a collection of her best reportage, following the principal events of the last two decades everywhere from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe.
