"A Study in Scarlet" is the first published story of one of the most famous literary detectives of all time, Sherlock Holmes. Here Dr. Watson, who has just returned from a war in Afghanistan, meets Sherlock Holmes for the first time when they become flat-mates at the famous 221 B Baker Street. In "A Study in Scarlet" Sherlock Holmes investigates a murder at Lauriston Gardens as Dr. Watson tags along with Holmes while narratively detailing his amazing deductive abilities.

Le problème final

Quand Conan Doyle délaisse Sherlock Holmes, ça donne un roman qui nous fait partager les aventures d'un étudiant, nommé Alleyne Edricson, devenu écuyer de Sir Nigel, et qui s'en va guerroyer en France, accompagné de joyeux drilles, à la tête de cette fameuse Compagnie Blanche, composée des plus valeureux archers d'Angleterre.



Le récit se déroule durant la guerre de Cent ans (on y croise, entre autres, Du Guesclin !) et les principaux ingrédients d'un bon roman de chevalerie sont réunis (avis aux amateurs !). Conan Doyle ressuscite les hauts faits d'armes, l'atmosphère des tournois, les duels acharnés et les combats héroïques, tout ceci pour l'honneur des dames, avec un grand souci du détail et de la rigueur historique, sans jamais pourtant alourdir le récit. Puisqu'on ne sait plus aujourd'hui écrire des romans de chevalerie, tâchons de découvrir ou redécouvrir les grands classiques du genre, en commençant par cette Compagnie Blanche.

Sherlock Holmes took his bottle from the corner of the mantel-piece and his hypodermic syringe from its neat morocco case. With his long, white, nervous fingers he adjusted the delicate needle, and rolled back his left shirt-cuff. For some little time his eyes rested thoughtfully upon the sinewy forearm and wrist all dotted and scarred with innumerable puncture-marks. Finally he thrust the sharp point home, pressed down the tiny piston, and sank back into the velvet-lined arm-chair with a long sigh of satisfaction.

Three times a day for many months I had witnessed this performance, but custom had not reconciled my mind to it. On the contrary, from day to day I had become more irritable at the sight, and my conscience swelled nightly within me at the thought that I had lacked the courage to protest.
