'WHAT do you think she'd do if she caught us? We oughtn't to have it, you know, ' said Maisie.

'Beat me, and lock you up in your bedroom, ' Dick answered, without hesitation. 'Have you got the cartridges?'

'Yes; they're in my pocket, but they are joggling horribly. Do pin-fire cartridges go off of their own accord?'

'Don't know. Take the revolver, if you are afraid, and let me carry them.'

'I'm not afraid.' Maisie strode forward swiftly, a hand in her pocket and her chin in the air. Dick followed with a small pin-fire revolver.

The children had discovered that their lives would be unendurable without pistol-practice. After much forethought and self-denial, Dick had saved seven shillings and sixpence, the price of a badly constructed Belgian revolver. Maisie could only contribute half a crown to the syndicate for the purchase of a hundred cartridges. 'You can save better than I can, Dick, ' she explained; 'I like nice things to eat, and it doesn't matter to you. Besides, boys ought to do these things.'

L'homme qui voulut être roi

Mowgli, la « grenouille », un bébé perdu dans la jungle lors d'une attaque du lâche Shere Khan, est recueilli par une meute de loups. Passant son enfance parmi les animaux, il apprend la loi de la jungle avec l'ours Baloo, la panthère Bagheera et sa mère-louve Rashka qui l'a arraché aux griffes de Shere Khan. Dans ce milieu hostile, la vie est une lutte, et il doit affronter de nombreux ennemis. Le peuple des singes, d'abord, qui le kidnappe par les airs après une dispute avec Baloo, et dont il sera sauvé grâce à une alliance avec le grand serpent Kaa... Et surtout, le vieux tigre boiteux et revanchard qui a juré sa perte, depuis son humiliation par les loups. Mais Mowgli saura, avec ses amis, faire preuve d'ingéniosité !

In the beginning of years, when the world was so new and all, and the Animals were just beginning to work for Man, there was a Camel, and he lived in the middle of a Howling Desert because he did not want to work; and besides, he was a Howler himself. So he ate sticks and thorns and tamarisks and milkweed and prickles, most 'scruciating idle; and when anybody spoke to him he said 'Humph!' Just 'Humph!' and no more.

Presently the Horse came to him on Monday morning, with a saddle on his back and a bit in his mouth, and said, 'Camel, O Camel, come out and trot like the rest of us.'

'Humph!' said the Camel; and the Horse went away and told the Man.

Presently the Dog came to him, with a stick in his mouth, and said, 'Camel, O Camel, come and fetch and carry like the rest of us.'

'Humph!' said the Camel; and the Dog went away and told the Man.

Presently the Ox came to him, with the yoke on his neck and said, 'Camel, O Camel, come and plough like the rest of us.'

'Humph!' said the Camel; and the Ox went away and told the Man.

At the end of the day the Man called the Horse and the Dog and the Ox together, and said, 'Three, O Three, I'm very sorry for you (with the world so new-and-all); but that Humph-thing in the Desert can't work, or he would have been here by now, so I am going to leave him alone, and you must work double-time to make up for it.'

The jungle book

Texte intégral révisé suivi d'une biographie de Rudyard Kipling. Charlie Mears, Un jeune commis de banque sans aucun talent littéraire, demande des conseils à un écrivain chevronné afin d'écrire une nouvelle qu'il vient d'imaginer. Celui-ci comprend bientôt que Charlie se remémore inconsciemment de palpitantes aventures vécues réellement lors ses existences antérieures de viking et de galérien grec. En mal d'inspiration, il lui achète son idée contre un billet de cinq livres et tente de s'approprier bribes par bribes le récit du jeune homme, convaincu que le fruit de cette métempsychose pourrait devenir la plus belle histoire du monde: "Il m'était donné, à moi entre tous les hommes, la chance d'écrire le plus merveilleux récit du monde". Mais la mémoire de Charlie se tarit lorsqu'il tombe amoureux. Les portes de son inconscient se referment et la plus belle histoire du monde ne sera jamais écrite: "Je comprenais désormais pourquoi les Seigneurs de la Vie et de la Mort refermaient si soigneusement les portes derrière nous. C'était afin de nous empêcher de nous rappeler nos premières amours". Par cette fable, l'auteur du célèbre Livre de la jungle, Prix Nobel de littérature, interroge le mystérieux processus de la création littéraire et nous fait pénétrer avec humour dans le monde complexe de l'inspiration et de l'imagination créatrice.
