"Folklore, legends, myths and fairy tales have followed childhood through the ages, for every healthy youngster has a wholesome and instinctive love for stories fantastic, marvelous and manifestly unreal. The winged fairies of Grimm and Andersen have brought more happiness to childish hearts than all other human creations. 

Yet the old time fairy tale, having served for generations, may now be classed as "historical" in the children's library; for the time has come for a series of newer "wonder tales" in which the stereotyped genie, dwarf and fairy are eliminated, together with all the horrible and blood-curdling incidents devised by their authors to point a fearsome moral to each tale. Modern education includes morality; therefore the modern child seeks only entertainment in its wonder tales and gladly dispenses with all disagreeable incident. 

Having this thought in mind, the story of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" was written solely to please children of today. It aspires to being a modernized fairy tale, in which the wonderment and joy are retained and the heartaches and nightmares are left out. "

THE oceans are big and broad. I believe two-thirds of the earth's surface is covered with water. What people inhabit this water has always been a subject of curiosity to the inhabitants of the land. Strange creatures come from the seas at times, and perhaps in the ocean depths are many, more strange than mortal eye has ever gazed upon.

This story is fanciful. In it the sea people talk and act much as we do, and the mermaids especially are not unlike the fairies with whom we have learned to be familiar. Yet they are real sea people, for all that, and with the exception of Zog the Magician they are all supposed to exist in the ocean's depths.

I am told that some very learned people deny that mermaids or sea-serpents have ever inhabited the oceans, but it would be very difficult for them to prove such an assertion unless they had lived under the water as Trot and Cap'n Bill did in this story.

I hope my readers who have so long followed Dorothy's adventures in the Land of Oz will be interested in Trot's equally strange experiences. The ocean has always appealed to me as a veritable wonderland, and this story has been suggested to me many times by my young correspondents in their letters. Indeed, a good many children have implored me to "write something about the mermaids, " and I have willingly granted the request.

The Sea Fairies

"Dann", antwortete er und wackelte langsam mit dem Kopf, "lächeln und winken die Meerjungfrauen ihm zu, und er taucht ins Wasser ein und ertrinkt."

"Ich würde gerne eine Meerjungfrau sehen, Käpt'n Bill", sagte das Kind ernst.

"Wie, und ertränkt werden?", rief er aus.

"Nein, und überleben, um davon zu erzählen. Wenn sie schön, heiter und freundlich sind, können sie nicht böse sein, da bin ich mir sicher."

So erzählt der alte einbeinige Käpt'n Bill eines Tages der kleinen Mayre Griffiths, Spitzname Trot, von den Meerjungfrauen. Ihr Gespräch wird jedoch belauscht, und als sie am nächsten Tag eine Meereshöhle an der Küste besuchen, werden sie von mehreren Meerjungfrauen überrascht, die sie einladen, sie in ihr Unterwasserreich zu begleiten.

Dort lernen die beiden Besucher an der Seite der freundlichen Meerjungfrauen die Schönheiten und Gefahren der Tiefsee kennen. Als jedoch der böse Zauberer Zog, ein abscheuliches Mischwesen aus Mensch, Fisch, Vogel und Reptil, die Gunst der Stunde nutzt, und sie auf sein verwunschenes Schloß entführt, finden sie sich plötzlich in einer lebensbedrohlichen Lage wieder. Es scheint fast, als würden sie tatsächlich nicht überleben, um von den Meerjungfrauen zu erzählen...

No one intended to leave Martha alone that afternoon, but it happened that everyone was called away, for one reason or another. Mrs. McFarland was attending the weekly card party held by the Women's Anti-Gambling League. Sister Nell's young man had called quite unexpectedly to take her for a long drive. Papa was at the office, as usual. It was Mary Ann's day out. As for Emeline, she certainly should have stayed in the house and looked after the little girl; but Emeline had a restless nature.

"Would you mind, miss, if I just crossed the alley to speak a word to Mrs. Carleton's girl?" she asked Martha.

"'Course not, " replied the child. "You'd better lock the back door, though, and take the key, for I shall be upstairs."

"Oh, I'll do that, of course, miss, " said the delighted maid, and ran away to spend the afternoon with her friend, leaving Martha quite alone in the big house, and locked in, into the bargain.
