L'argument premier de ce récit relève du fantastique. Les dix épisodes qui le constituent se jouent de toute linéarité ou chronologie. Ils convoquent des dizaines de personnages - on y découvre, entre autres, un membre d'une secte apocalyptique auteur d'un attentat au gaz sarin dans le métro à Tokyo, deux amoureux fans de jazz au Japon, une femme qui parle à un arbre au sommet d'une montagne sacrée en Chine, ou encore l'esprit d'un gangster Mongol qui voyage de corps en corps - , et explorent le système complexe de la causalité au sein d'un groupe d'individus de tous bords, éparpillés aux quatre coins du monde. Ainsi chaque histoire a-t-elle des implications sans lesquelles les autres ne sauraient exister.
La force de ce texte tient à son absence volontaire d'homogénéisation ; tour à tour histoire d'amour, thriller post-guerre froide, ou roman d'anticipation, il trouve son unité dans sa thématique même : une réflexion sur le hasard et les moyens de le contrer. Au fil de la lecture, on est alors invité à traquer les réapparitions d'éléments qui semblaient au premier abord insignifiants, à guetter « l'éternel retour » des personnages et des objets susceptibles d'infléchir le cours de la narration.
David Mitchell avec brio mène cette polyphonie où viennent se mêler voix humaines ou d'outre-tombe, voix perdues dans l'éther du cyber ou investissant des machines.
