Danach bemerkt Dorian Gray an dem Porträtgemälde einige kleinere Veränderungen. An der Mundpartie ist ein harter Zug sichtbar geworden. Sein Wunsch ist offenbar in Erfüllung gegangen. Die Spuren seines Handelns zeigen sich nicht mehr im eigenen Gesicht, sondern nur noch im Bildnis. Gray versteckt es sicherheitshalber im Dachzimmer seines Hauses. 

Dorian Gray agiert immer selbstbezogener und rücksichtsloser. Vielen Menschen, denen er begegnet, wird er zum Verhängnis. Auf seinem Gesicht ist davon nichts zu erkennen. Doch das Bildnis wird immer hässlicher. Gray überlegt, wie er den gefährlichen Beweis seiner tatsächlichen Persönlichkeit loswerden kann.
