Flat Stanley in Space

Colonel Jake Harris is being forced to retire at the age of forty-eight after a distinguised thirty year career spent entirely overseas, having enlisted after the deadliest school shooting in hstory as one of only three survivors. He returns to the United States to find that it is nothing like what he left. The government is in control of everything from transportation to employment. Every business is now controlled by the government. He finds that his pension and retirement savings were absorbed by the government's General Fund and he is forced into a menial job to afford himself decent living conditions. He tries to settle in, but it's just not working. Then he meets a group of people that have determined the school shooting to have been the catalyst for the totalitarian soicalist government to take control. One of the group, a renegade scientist, has developed a unique method of time travel and sends his forty-eight year old consciousness back to his seventeen year-old body in an attempt to stop the shooting and return history to its normal course.

The Veteran

Poor Stanley. He's a perfectly normal boy until one morning he wakes up flat. After his parents peel the incriminating bulletin board off of him, Stanley must adjust to life as a pancake. He is a boy who takes this kind of thing in stride, though, and soon he's enjoying the advantages of squashedness. Sliding under closed doors is fun, and it's gratifying to be of use to his mother when she drops her ring through a narrow metal grating. Expensive plane fare to California? No problem. Svelte Stanley folds comfortably into a brown paper envelope. There's even room left over in there for an egg-salad sandwich. But Stanley's true moment of glory comes when a gang of thieves begins stealing paintings from the Famous Museum of Art. The case seems hopeless--until our two-dimensional hero saves the day.  Jeff Brown was a story editor and assistant film producer in Hollywood. He worked on the at The New Yorker and the Saturday Evening Post, and his stories appeared in these magazines and many others. Jeff created the classic character Flat Stanley, whose adventures have been beloved by children around the world for more than 50 years. He died in Manhattan in 2003.

 Rob Biddulph is a bestselling and award-winning children's book author and illustrator. He won the Waterstones Children's Book Prize for Blown Away and was nominated for the Kate Greenaway medal for GRRRRR! His other books include Odd Dog Out (Aug 2016) and Sunk! (March 2017).
