"- Leur Progrès, comme ils disent, ça marche, déclara M. Tom Smallways, ça marche, et l'on se demande comment ça peut toujours marcher. 

M. Smallways faisait cette remarque longtemps avant le début de la guerre dans les airs, accoté contre la palissade, au bout de son jardin, et, d'un regard qui n'exprimait ni louange ni blâme, il contemplait la vaste usine à gaz de Bun Hill. Au-dessus des gazomètres pressés les uns contre les autres, trois formes étranges apparurent, grandes vessies flasques qui se balançaient lourdement, devenaient plus rondes et plus énormes - des ballons que l'on gonflait pour les ascensions hebdomadaires de l'Aéro-Club. 

- C'est comme ça tous les samedis, précisa le voisin M. Stringer, le laitier. Pas plus tard qu'hier, tout le monde se serait précipité pour voir un ballon partir, et maintenant il n'y a pas un trou à la campagne qui n'ait son départ de ballon tous les dimanches... Heureusement pour les compagnies du gaz ! 

- Samedi dernier, répliqua M. Smallways, j'ai été obligé de ramasser trois brouettées de gravier dans mes pommes de terre... trois brouettées de lest qu'ils nous ont versées sur la tête. Ils m'ont écrasé les touffes qui n'étaient pas enterrées. 

- Il y a des dames, parait-il, qui montent là-dedans... 

- Si on peut appeler ça des dames... En tout cas, ce n'est pas l'idée que je me fais d'une dame... Grimper en l'air et jeter des tas de sable sur le monde, ce n'est pas cela qu'on m'a enseigné à considérer comme une occupation pour des dames. 

M. Stringer approuva de la tête, et les deux voisins continuèrent à surveiller les masses boursouflées, avec une expression qui avait passé de l'indifférence à la désapprobation."

Bert Smallways vit tranquillement dans une petite ville d'Angleterre. Avec son associé Grubb, il vivote de la location de vélos et la réparation mécanique. Rien ne le prédestinait à se retrouver à bord du dirigeable allemand qui allait agresser New-York et déclencher une terrible guerre mondiale sans fin...

Bien qu?occulté par des textes plus célèbres d?H. G. Wells,D es Hommes comme des Dieux (Men like Gods), publié en 1923, reste un des meilleurs romans sur l?utopie sociale qui a toujours fasciné l?auteur mais aussi, et peut-être surtout, une fantastique vision prophétique sur l'avenir de nos sociétés malades?

Des hommes comme des dieux

Two eternal beings, magnificently enhaloed, the one in a blinding excess of white radiance and the other in a bewildering extravagance of colours, converse amidst stupendous surroundings. These surroundings are by tradition palatial, but there is now also a marked cosmic tendency about them. They have no definite locality; they are above and comprehensive of the material universe.

There is a quality in the scene as if a futurist with a considerable knowledge of modern chemical and physical speculation and some obscure theological animus had repainted the designs of a pre-Raphaelite. The vast pillars vanish into unfathomable darknesses, and the complicated curves and whorls of the decorations seem to have been traced by the flight of elemental particles. Suns and planets spin and glitter through the avanturine depths of a floor of crystalline ether. Great winged shapes are in attendance, wrought of iridescences and bearing globes, stars, rolls of the law, flaming swords, and similar symbols. The voices of the Cherubim and Seraphim can be heard crying continually, "Holy, Holy, Holy."

Ce livre en est la conséquence, tant la Destinée se plaît à embrouiller les pauvres petits plans des hommes. 

Je puis, peut-être, dire ici que je venais alors de perdre de grosses sommes dans certaines entreprises malheureuses. Entouré maintenant de tout le confort de la richesse, j'éprouve un certain plaisir à faire cet aveu. Je veux même admettre encore que j'étais, jusqu'à un certain point, responsable de mes propres désastres. Il se peut que, pour diverses choses, je sois doué de quelque capacité, mais la conduite des affaires n'est certes pas de ce nombre. 

En ce temps-là j'étais jeune - je le suis encore, quant aux années - mais tout ce qui m'est arrivé depuis a effacé de mon esprit ce qu'il y restait de trop juvénile. Que j'en aie acquis quelque sagesse est une question plus douteuse... 

Il n'est pas nécessaire d'entrer dans le détail des spéculations qui me débarquèrent à Lympne, dans le comté de Kent." 

M. Bedford s'installe dans une petite ville calme pour écrire LE drame qui renflouera ses caisses. Il fait la connaissance d'un voisin très particulier dont le comportement est étrange : c'est le savant Cavor. Celui-ci tente de mettre au point un métal, la cavorite, qui lui permettra de circuler dans l'espace et pourquoi pas... aller dans la lune...

On the Night of the Strange Bird, many people at Sidderton (and some nearer) saw a Glare on the Sidderford moor. But no one in Sidderford saw it, for most of Sidderford was abed.

All day the wind had been rising, so that the larks on the moor chirruped fitfully near the ground, or rose only to be driven like leaves before the wind. The sun set in a bloody welter of clouds, and the moon was hidden. The glare, they say, was golden like a beam shining out of the sky, not a uniform blaze, but broken all over by curving flashes like the waving of swords. It lasted but a moment and left the night dark and obscure. There were letters about it in Nature, and a rough drawing that no one thought very like. (You may see it for yourself-the drawing that was unlike the glare-on page 42 of Vol. cclx. of that publication.)

None in Sidderford saw the light, but Annie, Hooker Durgan's wife, was lying awake, and she saw the reflection of it-a flickering tongue of gold-dancing on the wall.

The Wonderful Visit
