Great Expectations

C'est l'un des mérites de Dickens d'avoir remis Noël à l'honneur. Hissant le 25 décembre au rang de " meilleur jour de l'année ", il fit de cette fête celle de la famille et de la générosité. Le célèbre Cantique de Noël (1843) conte la rédemption de Scrooge, vieil avare égoïste, ennemi des réjouissances, dont trois fantômes vont attendrir le coeur. Les Carillons (1844) et Le Grillon du foyer (1845), paraboles sur les bienfaits du bonheur domestique, mettent à l'honneur la dinde, les cadeaux et le sapin, devenus les symboles de ce jour de joie.

Thirty years ago, Marseilles lay burning in the sun, one day.

A blazing sun upon a fierce August day was no greater rarity in southern France then, than at any other time, before or since. Everything in Marseilles, and about Marseilles, had stared at the fervid sky, and been stared at in return, until a staring habit had become universal there. Strangers were stared out of countenance by staring white houses, staring white walls, staring white streets, staring tracts of arid road, staring hills from which verdure was burnt away. The only things to be seen not fixedly staring and glaring were the vines drooping under their load of grapes. These did occasionally wink a little, as the hot air barely moved their faint leaves.

There was no wind to make a ripple on the foul water within the harbour, or on the beautiful sea without. The line of demarcation between the two colours, black and blue, showed the point which the pure sea would not pass; but it lay as quiet as the abominable pool, with which it never mixed. Boats without awnings were too hot to touch; ships blistered at their moorings; the stones of the quays had not cooled, night or day, for months. Hindoos, Russians, Chinese, Spaniards, Portuguese, Englishmen, Frenchmen, Genoese, Neapolitans, Venetians, Greeks, Turks, descendants from all the builders of Babel, come to trade at Marseilles, sought the shade alike-taking refuge in any hiding-place from a sea too intensely blue to be looked at, and a sky of purple, set with one great flaming jewel of fire.

Élevé dans un orphelinat de l'Angleterre victorienne, Oliver Twist survit au milieu de ses compagnons d'infortune. Mal nourri, exploité, il est placé chez Mr Sowerberry, fabricant de cercueils et croque-mort de son état. Là encore, il ne connaît que privations et mauvais traitements. Oliver endure tout, jusqu'au jour où une provocation de l'épouse de M Sowerberry le pousse à se battre puis à s'enfuir vers Londres

Épuisé, affamé, il est recueilli par une bande de jeunes voleurs qui travaillent pour le vieux Fagin. Entre Sikes, Nancy, Charley Bates, Toby Crackit, Finaud et les autres, Oliver découvre un monde cruel où seules comptent la ruse et la force.

Après une arrestation pour un vol qu'il n'a pas commis, Oliver se retrouve chez M. Brownlow qui le traite comme un fils. Mais la bande de jeunes voleurs le retrouve et le force à participer à un cambriolage qui se termine par un échec et une blessure d'Oliver. Heureusement, la famille Maylie le prend en pitié et s'occupe de lui. Plus tard, il parviendra à retourner chez Mr Brownlow et il apprendra d'où il vient.

Oliver Twist

Charles John Huffam Dickens (7 February 1812 - 9 June 1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's most memorable fictional characters and is generally regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian period.
