En 1983, David Goldblatt participa a une étude importante sur la pauvreté en Afrique du Sud. Sa tâche était de réaliser un essai photographique sur le transport des habitants du bantoustan KwaNdebele situé à une centaine de kilomètres au nord-est de Pretoria. Ses clichés dépeignent les trajets harassants de ses travailleurs qui partent en pleine nuit, ensommeillés, pour aller travailler à Pretoria et reviennent épuisés rejoindre leur foyer après avoir voyagé jusqu'à huit heures pour certains. Ce document d'une grande force est complété par des interviews et un essai sur l'histoire de KwaNdebele.
