Un soir, le producteur Thurman et son épouse surprennent deux cambrioleurs qui, sous la menace d'une arme, ligotent le mari, avant de violer et de tuer la femme. À la suite de ce décès, Thurman hérite d'une importante fortune. Convaincu qu'il a commandité le meurtre, un policier demande au détective privé Matt Scudder de surveiller le producteur. Lors d'un gala de boxe, le privé repère un autre homme qui caresse de façon particulière la tête d'un enfant ; ce geste lui rappelle une cassette vidéo très spéciale que lui avait confié un habitué des Alcooliques anonymes six mois plus tôt. On pouvait y voir un film pornographique dont le clou était l'assassinat non simulé d'un enfant enchaîné par un couple masqué. Après avoir fait réaliser des portraits robots des enfants, Matt entame ses recherches dans les bars louches.

The basis of the recent film starring Liam Neeson, A Walk Among the Tombstones is Matthew Scudder's tenth appearance. He's hired by a drug dealer whose wife has been savagely murdered, and Scudder's pursuit of the faceless killers leads him on a chase through Manhattan and Brooklyn, with an unforgettable denouement in Green-Wood Cemetery. TJ, Scudder's streetwise young friend, is on hand, and Scudder's girlfriend Elaine plays a vital role, even as their relationship has its challenges. Cale Hanniford, la cinquantaine, vient de perdre sa fille, Wendy, tuée par Richard Vanderpoel, le jeune homme avec lequel elle vivait à New York.
Couvert de sang et incohérent, celui-ci a été arrêté et jeté en prison, où il s'est pendu. Pour la police, le dossier est clos, mais Hanniford veut le rouvrir : il est sûr que Richard est coupable, mais, rongé par le remords de ne pas avoir fait assez pour sa fille, aimerait savoir pourquoi elle a fini par se prostituer et mourir assassinée. Matt Scudder comprend vite que Hanniford lui ment sur un point capital.
Pressé de répondre, celui-ci finit par tâcher que Wendy n'était sa fille que par adoption. Flairant l'arnaque, Scudder décide d'enquêter : la police est-elle allée trop vite en accusant le fils d'un pasteur élevé dans le strict respect de la loi divine ? Avec ce livre paru en 1976, le grand maître du policier Lawrence Block (" La Balade entre les tombes ", " Ils y passeront tous ", " L'Amour du métier ", " Même les scélérats ", etc.) ouvrait l'illustre série des Matt Scudder.
