On connaît surtout le film de Victor Fleming, sorti en 1939, avec Judy Garland dans le rôle de Dorothy. Mais Le Magicien d’Oz est au départ un roman de l’écrivain américain L. Frank Baum, paru en 1900 et comptant de nombreuses adaptations, tant sur la scène qu’à l’écran. Après Le Magicien d’Oz, seul titre traduit en France jusqu’ici dans sa version intégrale, l’auteur a écrit treize autres volumes, qui constituent Le Cycle d’Oz mettant en scène différents personnages dans différentes contrées du merveilleux pays d’Oz. Le premier tome, préfacé par Fabrice Colin, un des meilleurs auteurs jeunesse actuels, illustré par Stéphane Levallois, comprend les deux premiers épisodes, Le Magicien d’Oz dans une toute nouvelle traduction, et Le merveilleux pays d’Oz. Tous trois se rendent auprès du magicien pour demander ce qui leur manque. Ce dernier consent, à condition qu’ils éliminent la méchante sorcière de l’ouest. Le merveilleux pays d’Oz - Un jeune garçon nommé Tip, qui vit sous la garde d’une sorcière, fabrique un homme à tête de citrouille. Il anime un tréteau pour lui en faire un cheval. Tous deux vont chercher fortune à la Cité d’Émeraude. Ils y rencontrent l’Épouvantail, qui s’est fait renverser du pouvoir par un général. Ils vont au château du Bûcheron de fer blanc pour qu’il les aide à remettre l’Épouvantail sur le trône.

Livre 3 Ozma du Pays d'Oz (1907) Alors que Dorothy voyage vers l’Australie avec son oncle Henry, une tempête éclate et la fillette passe par-dessus bord avec une poule du nom de Billina. Elles s’échouent sur le rivage du Pays d'Ev, une terre féerique séparée du Pays d’Oz par un vaste désert, où elles rencontrent Tik-Tok, un homme mécanique. Au palais royal d’Evna, la fillette apprend que l’épouse et les enfants du défunt roi Evoldo sont prisonniers du roi des Nomes. La princesse Ozma du Pays d’Oz, accompagnée de l’Épouvantail (désormais roi d'Oz), du Bûcheron de Fer-Blanc et du Lion Peureux, rejoint Dorothy et ses amis sur un tapis magique et les emmène au royaume des Nomes dans le but de libérer la famille royale d’Ev. Là, ils affrontent Roquat, le roi des Nomes, qui a transformé la reine d’Ev et ses enfants en bibelots. Après maintes péripéties, la famille royale est secourue grâce à la poule Billina. Dorothy, Ozma et les autres parviennent à s’enfuir après avoir volé la ceinture magique du roi des Nomes et retournent à Evna, où le jeune Evardo est couronné. Puis tous regagnent la Cité d’Émeraude. Dorothy y séjourne quelques semaines avant d’être transportée en Australie, où l’attend son oncle Henry. Livre 4 Dorothy et le Magicien au Pays d’Oz (1908) De retour d’Australie, Dorothy se rend en Californie et fait la connaissance de son cousin, Zeb Hugson. En chemin, les deux enfants, le cheval Jim et le chaton Eureka sont engloutis par un tremblement de terre et atterrissent dans la contrée des Mangaboos, peuplée d’hommes-légumes. Ils y retrouvent le Magicien d’Oz, arrivé dans une montgolfière avec ses neuf minuscules porcelets. Chassés de ce territoire, Dorothy et ses amis entreprennent un périple souterrain qui les mène à la Vallée de Voe, dont les habitants sont invisibles, puis à la contrée de Naught, où vivent des Gargouilles de bois, qui les emprisonnent. Après s’être évadés, ils tentent de remonter à la surface de la terre, mais se retrouvent dans une grotte sans issue ; ce n’est que grâce à l’intervention d’Ozma qui se sert de la ceinture magique du roi des Nomes que Dorothy et ses amis sont transportés au Pays d’Oz. Le Magicien décide de rester en Oz, tandis que Dorothy, Zeb, Jim et Eureka repartent chez eux, encore une fois grâce à la ceinture magique.
