As well as being a bibliophile´s delight, the edition also offer the opportunity to study the composer´s own manuscript in all its details. The most subtle nuances, which can only be represented in musical handwriting and never in print, can thus provide a logical extension of the typographical limitations of engraving, and convey additional stimuli for consideration of the interpretation of the work. Chopin a toujours voué un soin particulier à l'art du contrepoint. Au début des années 1840, il se plonge notamment dans l'étude du Cours de contrepoint et de fugue de Cherubini (1832), dont il transcrit trois fugues pour piano. L'autographe, inédit et conservé dans une collection particulière, figure parmi ceux que Chopin a écrits avec le plus grand soin. Il est reproduit dans ce volume pour la première fois. Dans l'introduction, Jean-Jacques Eigeldinger retrace l'histoire de ce manuscrit fascinant et revient sur l'importance du contrepoint pour Chopin, qui en prit le goût dès sa jeunesse, à Varsovie, avec ses maîtres Zywny et Elsner, qui lui transmirent aussi le culte de J.-S. Bach et du Clavier bien tempéré. Le volume est augmenté de plusieurs exemples musicaux, illustrations (portraits de Chopin à sa table de travail et de Cherubini), facsimilés et transcriptions des autres rares manuscrits contrapuntiques de Chopin (exercices de contrepoint sur chants donnés de Cherubini et un fragment de canon à l'octave, préparatoire au finale de la Sonate op. 65 pour piano et violoncelle), enfin des notes critiques. En annexe sont présentés les extraits du Cours de contrepoint de Cherubini qui ont servi de modèle à Chopin.

This volume presents easy pieces for piano by great virtuosos. It unites the two greatest, and perhaps best-known, pianists of the 19th century, Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt. The technical requirements of these works are very moderate without muting the stylistic characteristics of these two composers. The ability to play an original composition by Liszt in the first years of lessons can be very motivating for the piano student. Also featured in this collection are works by the virtuoso Ferdinand Hiller, to whom Robert Schumann dedicated his Piano Concerto. As in many of the works by Liszt and Chopin, Hiller's works are frequently reminiscent of folk music. His Irländisches Lied and Fandango, included in the collection, are fine examples of 19th-century 'world music'. Instrumentation : piano
