Everyone knows the popular conception of Florence Nightingale. The saintly, self-sacrificing woman, the delicate maiden of high degree who threw aside the pleasures of a life of ease to succor the afflicted, the Lady with the Lamp, gliding through the horrors of the hospital at Scutari, and consecrating with the radiance of her goodness the dying soldier's couch-the vision is familiar to all. But the truth was different.

La collection Toms est l'une des plus grandes collections de tapisseries anciennes constituées de manière privée durant la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle. Elle comprend plus de cent oeuvres, tissées entre le XVIe et le XIXe siècle dans les ateliers des Flandres, de France, d'Italie et d'Angleterre, et se caractérise tant par sa diversité géographique, chronologique et thématique que par son remarquable état de conservation.

Ce patrimoine a été légué en 1993 au Canton de Vaud (Suisse) par Mary Toms, veuve de Reginald. Le couple de collectionneurs était établi depuis 1958 au Château de Coinsins, entre Lausanne et Genève. En créant la Fondation Toms Pauli en 2000, l'Etat de Vaud a regroupé en une seule institution cette collection prestigieuse et celle d'art textile contemporain (1961-1992), reçue également en donation.

La présente publication documente toutes les oeuvres tissées de la collection Toms et en fait l'analyse historique et artistique. Les auteurs, Guy Delmarcel, Nicole de Reyniès et Wendy Hefford, font chacun autorité dans leurs domaines respectifs : ceux de la tapisserie flamande, française et anglaise. Ce catalogue permet de découvrir un large éventail de pièces issues d'une des grandes traditions artistiques européennes. Acquises sur le marché de l'art dans les années i960, ces tapisseries avaient disparu de la vue du public et des chercheurs depuis près d'un demi-siècle.

A leur époque, les tapisseries étaient bien plus onéreuses que les peintures. Mais au-delà de leur valeur, leur système complexe de production et de distribution en fait des témoins éloquents des sociétés qui les appréciaient. Richement illustré, l'ouvrage s'adresse autant aux spécialistes qu'aux lecteurs néophytes.

Philosophy was defined by the Stoics as 'the knowledge of things divine and human'.
When Socrates declared before his judges that "there is no evil to a good man either in life or after death, nor are his affairs neglected by the gods", he sounded the keynote of Stoicism, with its two main doctrines of virtue as the only good, and the government of the world by Providence. Let us weigh his words, lest we interpret them by the light of a comfortable modern piety. A great many things that are commonly called evil may and do happen to a good man in this life, and therefore presumably misfortunes may also overtake him in any other life that there may be. The only evil that can never befall him is vice, because that would be a contradiction in terms. Unless therefore Socrates was uttering idle words on the most solemn occasion of his life, he must be taken to have meant that there is no evil but vice, which implies that there is no good but virtue. Thus we are landed at once in the heart of the Stoic morality. To the question why, if there be a providence, so many evils happen to good men, Seneca unflinchingly replies: "No evil can happen to a good man, contraries do not mix." God has removed from the good all evil: because he has taken from them crimes and sins, bad thoughts and selfish designs and blind lust and grasping avarice. He has attended well to themselves, but he cannot be expected to look after their luggage: they relieve him of that care by being indifferent about it. This is the only form in which the doctrine of divine providence can be held consistently with the facts of life Again, when Socrates on the same occasion expressed his belief that it was not "permitted by the divine law for a better man to be harmed by a worse", he was asserting by implication the Stoic position...

Ce livre présente l'histoire du calendrier depuis son origine jusqu'aux différentes réformes ayant conduit au calendrier actuel.  «Le calendrier désigne une distribution de temps accommodée aux usages de la vie, une table contenant l'ordre des jours, des semaines et des mois de l'année. Étymologiquement, Calendrier vient du mot calendae qui servait à désigner chez les Romains le premier jour de chaque mois. On pense que calendae est un dérivé d'un ancien verbe latin calo (qui signifiait j'appelle, j'annonce), et que cette dénomination elle-même vient de ce que les pontifes romains chargés de régler le calendrier avaient l'habitude d'appeler le peuple dans le forum à chaque nouvelle lune (le premier jour du mois), pour lui indiquer quelle devait être la durée de chaque mois. Ainsi, étant donné que les Grecs antiques n'avaient pas de calendes dans leur division de l'année, est née l'expression « renvoyer aux calendes grecques », c'est-à-dire se débarrasser de quelqu'un ou de quelque chose par une promesse illusoire.
