En janvier 1870, Tourguéniev est invité par Maxime Du Camp à assister à l'exécution publique d'un jeune criminel devenu célèbre pour avoir commis huit meurtres sordides, Jean-Baptiste Troppmann. Poussé par une curiosité qui lui est malaisé d'expliquer, Tourguéniev accepte l'invitation et suit Troppmann de sa toilette funèbre jusqu à la guillotine. Description glaciale d'une mise à mort à laquelle assiste une foule de badauds avinés et braillards. "L'Exécution de Troppmann", écrit sans parti-pris, est le constat d'échec de la peine de mort, sans vertu dissuasive et absurdement immorale. Ce volume comprend: "L'Exécution de Troppmann", "Un incendie en mer" et "Une fin".

Son nom etait autrefois orthographie Tourguenieff ou Tourgueneff. Sa famille est aisee, et sa mere tres autoritaire. Il vit de 1838 a 1841 a Berlin avant de retourner a Saint-Petersbourg puis de partir pour Londres et de s'installer a Paris. Fiodor Dostoievski, qui le cite en epigraphe a sa nouvelle Les Nuits blanches, le caricature sous le nom de Karmazinov dans Les Demons.
