When Jonathan Harker visits Transylvania to help Count Dracula with the purchase of a London house, he makes a series of horrific discoveries about his client. Soon afterwards, various bizarre incidents unfold in England: an apparently unmanned ship is wrecked off the coast of Whitby; a young woman discovers strange puncture marks on her neck; and the inmate of a lunatic asylum raves about the 'Master' and his imminent arrival.

Dracula, l'un des romans les plus lus de tous les temps, est également l'un des plus incompris. Un livre rempli de symboles, d'allusions, de non-dits, sibyllin, somme toute, comme l'était l'époque victorienne à laquelle il fut écrit... sur une période de dix ans, commençant à l'été 1888, quand sévissait à Londres un tueur en série qui se surnomma lui-même Jack l'Eventreur. On ne le trouva jamais. Dans la préface de l'édition islandaise de Dracula, que peu de monde a lue, Stoker évoque les meurtres de l'Eventreur comme une possible source d'inspiration. Un mystère de plus à mettre à son actif. Plongez dans ce roman sulfureux, mais soyez prévenus : vous n'en sortirez peut-être pas indemnes...

Avant d'imaginer la figure monstrueuse de Dracula qui frappa tous les esprits, Bram Stoker (1847-1912) s'est essayé avec bonheur à distiller la peur dans ses nouvelles. En véritable géographe de l'intime, il transpose ses angoisses dans une multiplicité de décors et de genres : peur du spectre de la mort dans L'Homme de Shorrox (inédit) ; peur éprouvée par un équipage avant l'attaque de cruels pirates malais dans La Palissade rouge ; imminence de l'engloutissement qui provoque les confessions de voyageurs dans La Crainte de la mort (inédit). Pour Stoker, la condition humaine est engluement dont seuls souffrance et héroïsme peuvent délivrer.

L'homme de shorrox

Stoker escribió esta novela basándose en la figura de Vlad Draculea –más conocido como Vlad el Empalador–, príncipe de Valaquia (en el sur de Rumania) entre 1456 y 1462. El príncipe Vlad fue un gran luchador en contra del expansionismo otomano ; y, además, famoso en su época por su manera de castigar a los enemigos y traidores. Drácula es una novela escrita de manera epistolar, en la que se nos presenta la historia a través de la lectura de los diarios de los personajes. El relato se basa en diversas leyendas previas sobre vampirismo, aunque es Stoker quien consigue con esta obra una unidad en cuanto al efecto provocado en el lector, con sus inquietantes referencias eróticas y simbólicas, sin fronteras visibles entre vida y muerte, a través de un juego de seducción muy sugerente.

Jonathan Harker, jeune clerc de notaire britannique, est envoyé par son étude dans un sinistre château de Transylvanie afin d'y négocier avec un certain comte Dracula l'achat d'une propriété en Angleterre. Il ne tarde pas à découvrir l'effroyable secret de son hôte, un vampire qui repose dans un cercueil dont il sort la nuit pour étancher sa soif de sang -et le jeune homme devient son prisonnier. Le comte Dracula part pour l'Angleterre, où il choisit pour première victime Lucy, amie de Mina, la fiancée de Jonathan, avant de s'attaquer à Mina elle-même. Un roman gothique au procédé narratif novateur, lettres, extraits du journal de Jonathan, articles de presse, et même transcription d'enregistrements phonographiques ! La chasse aux vampires est ouverte...

Écrit sous forme d'extraits de journaux personnels et de lettre, ce roman nous conte les aventures de Jonathan Harker, jeune clerc de notaire envoyé dans une contrée lointaine et mystérieuse, la Transylvanie, pour rencontrer un client étranger, le comte Dracula, qui vient d'acquérir une maison à Londres. Arrivé au château, lieu sinistre et inquiétant, Jonathan se rend vite compte qu'il n'a pas à faire à un client ordinaire... et qu'il est en réalité retenu prisonnier par son hôte... Inutile de vous en dire plus, chacun sait qui est le terrible comte Dracula, le célèbre vampire... Le pauvre Jonathan, et ses amis, ne sont pas au bout de leurs peines...
