Quiconque a lu le Dracula de Bram Stoker sait la richesse d'une oeuvre que sa postérité cinématographique a participé à simplifier, et dans le même temps, à forger. Expérience de lecture étrange et paradoxale : lire Dracula vierge de tout parasite mythologique relève de l'impossible. L'image semble vouloir se glisser inexorablement entre les mots, et préparer notre imagination, l'infléchir, la contaminer.
Ce que propose cette réédition, afin de parvenir à cette état idéal de lecture, c'est de substituer l'analyse philosophique à l'enchevêtrement des représentations cinématographiques. Le kit de lecture, comme kit de survie de l'oeuvre.
La première idée est que Bram Stoker en nous donnant à lire le duel entre le Comte Dracula et le professeur Van Helsing nous livre une réflexion sur le statut philosophique de la science à la fin du XIXe siècle. Et au moment où Nietzsche est en train d'expirer, Bram Stoker semble s'inspirer des textes du philosophe au marteau pour modeler sa thèse : la science n'a pas réponse à tout, elle s'affirme et s'affermit dans une spirale vicieuse où rien ni personne ne peut la contredire. Deus sive sciencia, Dieu ou la science, pour parodier Spinoza. Comme l'écrira Stoker au cours du roman : « La puissance du vampire tient à ce que personne ne croit à son existence ». Du coup, les personnages sont contraints de devenir des voyous, bravant les lois et les interdits afin de lutter contre le mal, que tout le monde nie, puisque la raison n'est plus de la partie.
D'autre part, Dracula est une très belle réflexion sur l'éthique en ce crépuscule victorien. En fait, le bien et le mal, à l'image des échanges de sang qui parcourent le roman (sang volé par le vampire ou prêté pour résister à lui), se baladent sans avoir de place attitrée. Mina, la fiancée de Harker, est attirée par le Comte, Van Helsing est fasciné, aussi. Il admire sa force, son intelligence, sa culture, quelque part, le fait qu'il soit un vestige du passé qui ne veut pas passer. Car Dracula, c'est l'immortalité de la féodalité, du temps des Seigneurs, où les valeurs ne se construisaient pas sur le travail et l'argent, mais sur le sang et la guerre. Dracula, l'anti-moderne. Moins violent que le syndicalisme, Dracula pourrait se lire comme un traité de résistance à la société industrielle que plus rien ne peut arrêter en 1897, lors de la parution du texte.
