The president of the United States is shot in the head by a would-be assassin. Rushed to hospital and barely saved from death, he discovers that he has new memories - memories that are not his own.
A scientific experiment has gone awry, and a small group of people now remember each other's lives. And when one of those people's lives involved access to the most secret and dangerous information in the world, everything will change.

Cette technique a eu des effets secondaires inattendus, la rendant capable de voir le réseau Internet et de communiquer avec lui, l'éveillant peu à peu à la conscience. 
Veille raconte l'établissement d'une relation entre l'Intelligence Artificielle spontanée, entité nommé Webmind, et la jeune ex-aveugle. A mesure que l'IA apprend, grâce à Caitlin, à lire et donc à avoir accès aux ressources encyclopédiques du net, puis à déchiffrer des images et des films, elle découvre l'humanité, ses forces et ses faiblesses, et l'univers cosmique.
Mais bientôt, l'agence gouvernementale secrète chargée de surveiller Internet, convaincue que Webmind représente un risque pour la sécurité nationale, décide de l'éradiquer. Peut-on en effet laisser survivre une entité qui dispose de connaissances et de pouvoirs formidable alors qu'on ignore tout de ses intentions ? Persuadée que Webmind a pour unique dessein d'aider l'humanité, Caitlin va tout faire pour protéger son amie l'IA.

Veille

Pierre Tardivel is a scientist working on the Human Genome Project with the Nobel Prize winner Dr. Burian Klimus. A driven man, Pierre works with the awareness that he may not have long to live: he has a fifty-fifty chance of dying from Huntington's disease, an incurable hereditary disorder of the central nervous system. While he still has his health, Pierre and his wife decide to have a child, and they search for a sperm donor. When Pierre informs Dr. Klimus of their plan, Klimus makes an odd but generous offer: to be the sperm donor as well as to pay for the expensive in vitro fertilization. Shortly thereafter it transpires that Klimus may be hiding a grim past: he may be Ivan Marchenko, the notorious Treblinka death-camp guard known as Ivan the Terrible. While digging into Klimus's past with the help of Nazi hunter Avi Meyer, Pierre and his wife discover that Pierre's insurance company has been illegally screening clients for genetic defects. The two lines of investigation begin to converge in a sinister manner, while they worry about the possibility of bearing the child of an evil, sadistic killer...

Caitlin, jeune américaine de seize ans, aveugle de naissance, se voit proposer par un chercheur japonais, le professeur Kuroda, une prothèse qui remédierait à la défaillance de son nerf optique - l'œil lui-même et les centres visuels de son cerveau étant fonctionnels.Après la pose de la prothèse, le professeur Kuroda vient au Canada pour installer la liaison informatique avec le Japon qui traitera l'information. Dans un premier temps, le dispositif ne fonctionne pas : Caitlin ne voit pas le monde mais un réseau de lignes brillantes... Elle finit par comprendre qu'elles représentent le réseau Internet. La Toile, le Web. Le World Wide Web. Celui-ci, en retour, reçoit ce que l'œil de Caitlin voit, découvre par là même un nouvel univers, s'éveille à la conscience et devient une personne.Bientôt, le Réseau et Caitlin vont communiquer directement et la jeune fille, par ailleurs surdouée, va brancher la nouvelle entité sur des sites qui lui permettront d'apprendre et de comprendre notre monde...

2096. Affrété par le Common-wealth des planètes, le vaisseau Starplex sillonne la galaxie. Son objectif : découvrir de nouvelles formes de vie et entrer en communication avec elles.
Mais la tâche n'est pas aisée pour le commandant Keith Lansing. Il lui incombe en effet au préalable de faire cohabiter harmonieusement les membres de son équipage. Et ô combien diverses - et divergentes - sont les attitudes de son épouse Clarissa, d'un belliqueux physicien waldahud, ou d'un dauphin pilote farceur... Sans compter que l'enjeu de cette soi-disant mission de routine va vite s'avérer n'être ni plus ni moins que la préservation de la paix intergalactique, et que le paisible vaisseau d'exploration scientifique va devoir se transformer en navire de guerre !
