Il ne me vint pas un instant l'idée d'essayer d'attirer son attention, et, depuis le moment où j'aperçus distinctement son flanc et celui où je me retrouvai dans une cabine d'arrière, je n'ai que des souvenirs confus. Je garde encore une vague impression d'avoir été soulevé jusqu'au passavant, d'avoir vu une grosse figure rubiconde, pleine de taches de rousseur et entourée d'une chevelure et d'une barbe rouges, qui me regardait du haut de la passerelle ; d'avoir vu aussi une autre face très brune avec des yeux extraordinaires tout près des miens ; mais jusqu'à ce que je les eusse revus, je crus à un cauchemar. Il me semble qu'on dut verser, peu après, quelque liquide entre mes dents serrées, et ce fut tout."
 
Edward Prendick a fait naufrage. Seul survivant, il est sauvé par un bateau chargé d'animaux et est soigné par le docteur Montgomery, l'assistant du mystérieux docteur Moreau. Obligé, il se retrouve dans l'île appartenant à ce dernier et va de mystère en mystère...

Der Roman entwickelt darüber hinaus das Bild einer neuen Gesellschaftsordnung. Die althergebrachte Ordnung beschreibt H. G. Wells, dessen Eigenschaften im Hauptcharakter William Leadford deutlich wiederzuerkennen sind, in recht direkten und polemischen Worten. Der Aufbau der neuen Ordnung wird durch den Einschlag eines Kometen möglich. Bei dessen Einschlag wird ein grünes Pulver freigesetzt, das alle Lebewesen zunächst in Schlaf versetzt und ihnen zudem die aggressiven Gefühle nimmt. Nach dem Einschlag erfindet sich die Gesellschaft neu.

M. Smallways faisait cette remarque longtemps avant le début de la guerre dans les airs, accoté contre la palissade, au bout de son jardin, et, d'un regard qui n'exprimait ni louange ni blâme, il contemplait la vaste usine à gaz de Bun Hill. Au-dessus des gazomètres pressés les uns contre les autres, trois formes étranges apparurent, grandes vessies flasques qui se balançaient lourdement, devenaient plus rondes et plus énormes - des ballons que l'on gonflait pour les ascensions hebdomadaires de l'Aéro-Club. 

- C'est comme ça tous les samedis, précisa le voisin M. Stringer, le laitier. Pas plus tard qu'hier, tout le monde se serait précipité pour voir un ballon partir, et maintenant il n'y a pas un trou à la campagne qui n'ait son départ de ballon tous les dimanches... Heureusement pour les compagnies du gaz ! 

- Samedi dernier, répliqua M. Smallways, j'ai été obligé de ramasser trois brouettées de gravier dans mes pommes de terre... trois brouettées de lest qu'ils nous ont versées sur la tête. Ils m'ont écrasé les touffes qui n'étaient pas enterrées. 

- Il y a des dames, parait-il, qui montent là-dedans... 

- Si on peut appeler ça des dames... En tout cas, ce n'est pas l'idée que je me fais d'une dame... Grimper en l'air et jeter des tas de sable sur le monde, ce n'est pas cela qu'on m'a enseigné à considérer comme une occupation pour des dames. 

M. Stringer approuva de la tête, et les deux voisins continuèrent à surveiller les masses boursouflées, avec une expression qui avait passé de l'indifférence à la désapprobation."

Bert Smallways vit tranquillement dans une petite ville d'Angleterre. Avec son associé Grubb, il vivote de la location de vélos et la réparation mécanique. Rien ne le prédestinait à se retrouver à bord du dirigeable allemand qui allait agresser New-York et déclencher une terrible guerre mondiale sans fin...

La guerre dans les airs

Two eternal beings, magnificently enhaloed, the one in a blinding excess of white radiance and the other in a bewildering extravagance of colours, converse amidst stupendous surroundings. These surroundings are by tradition palatial, but there is now also a marked cosmic tendency about them. They have no definite locality; they are above and comprehensive of the material universe.

There is a quality in the scene as if a futurist with a considerable knowledge of modern chemical and physical speculation and some obscure theological animus had repainted the designs of a pre-Raphaelite. The vast pillars vanish into unfathomable darknesses, and the complicated curves and whorls of the decorations seem to have been traced by the flight of elemental particles. Suns and planets spin and glitter through the avanturine depths of a floor of crystalline ether. Great winged shapes are in attendance, wrought of iridescences and bearing globes, stars, rolls of the law, flaming swords, and similar symbols. The voices of the Cherubim and Seraphim can be heard crying continually, "Holy, Holy, Holy."

The Undying Fire

Als Graham erwacht, hat er 203 Jahre lang geschlafen. Er ist der Hauptcharakter in H. G. Wells »Wenn der Schläfer erwacht« . Wahrscheinlich ist Graham 1899 eingeschlafen, denn das ist das letzte Jahr in das seine Erinnerung zurückreicht. Der Roman spielt folglich um das Jahr 2100. Graham ist ohne sein Zutun zum Herrscher der Welt geworden. Einst hatten ihm zwei Männer ihr Vermögen vermacht, das von einem Vermögensverwalter so geschickt gemehrt wurde, dass ihm nun weite Teile der Erde gehören. Die Geschicke der Welt werden von einigen wenigen Menschen gesteuert; die anderen leben in sklavenähnlichen Verhältnissen.

H. G. Wells Zukunftsvision übt recht deutliche Kritik an den gesellschaftlichen Zuständen des frühindustriellen Englands, wie Wells es kannte. Manche seiner düsteren Prognosen für das Jahr 2100 scheint die Menschheit gebannt zu haben, bei anderen ist Wells Vorhersage erschreckend aktuell.

On the Night of the Strange Bird, many people at Sidderton (and some nearer) saw a Glare on the Sidderford moor. But no one in Sidderford saw it, for most of Sidderford was abed.

All day the wind had been rising, so that the larks on the moor chirruped fitfully near the ground, or rose only to be driven like leaves before the wind. The sun set in a bloody welter of clouds, and the moon was hidden. The glare, they say, was golden like a beam shining out of the sky, not a uniform blaze, but broken all over by curving flashes like the waving of swords. It lasted but a moment and left the night dark and obscure. There were letters about it in Nature, and a rough drawing that no one thought very like. (You may see it for yourself-the drawing that was unlike the glare-on page 42 of Vol. cclx. of that publication.)

None in Sidderford saw the light, but Annie, Hooker Durgan's wife, was lying awake, and she saw the reflection of it-a flickering tongue of gold-dancing on the wall.
