Résumé
A breathtaking visual biography of Lucian Freud, told in private photographs, painted portraits, and his own words. This unprecedented look at the private life of the painter begins with childhood snapshots and ends with photographs made in his studio in the last weeks of his life. In between, the career of one of the most important artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries is documented in family photos (some never before published), in images of the painter in his studio with some of his most celebrated sitters, in portraits by his peers - first among them Francis Bacon - and in his own words and writings by those who knew him. Created in collaboration with the Lucian Freud Archive and with the assistance of family members end friends of the artist. Includes some 150 images and a year-by-year chronological survey of the painter's life, each decade prefaced by a brief description of the historical context in which Freud lived and worked. This luxuriously produced volume complements the two-volume retrospective publication Lucian Freud, illustrating almost 500 works, also published by Phaidon Press.
