Dans la République romaine archaïque, alors que sévit la famine, le général Marcius, inflexible, refuse de parler au peuple et d’écouter ses récriminations. Surnommé Coriolan pour avoir conquis la ville de Corioles, ce chef autoritaire incarne le refus de céder aux compromis politiques et à la démocratie. Militaire élevé par une mère lui ayant transmis l’intransigeance, Coriolan oppose ses privilèges de chef à l’inconstance du peuple jusqu’à y laisser sa vie. La pièce politique de Shakespeare, créée en 1607 et publiée en 1623, questionne le pouvoir de l’État et la corruption de la démocratie, mais s’enrichit dans la traduction de Michel Garneau de nouvelles dimensions. Dans une langue québécoise poétique, épurée et affranchie de toutes contraintes, Garneau construit un drame rythmé, où les joutes oratoires rivalisent avec l’action dans un jeu incessant où la scène politique devient un grand théâtre. Commandée par l'École nationale de théâtre en 1989, dans une production où l’élite politique se déplaçait en patins à roulettes, ce Coriolan traduit le mouvement infernal de la guerre livrée entre les chefs et les citoyens. Pour venir en aide à Bassanio et lui permettre de se rendre à Belmont afin de demander la main de son aimée Portia, le marchand Antonio emprunte de l'argent à l'usurier Shylock. Certain de pouvoir le rembourser, Antonio signe un contrat qui autorise son créancier à lui prélever une livre de chair en cas de défaut de paiement. Malheureusement, il ne peut faire face à l'échéance et Shylock, qui veut se venger des humiliations infligées par les chrétiens de Venise, insiste pour que le contrat soit appliqué à la lettre...Oscillant entre comédie et tragédie, Le Marchand de Venise soulève de nombreuses interrogations : considérée comme l'une des «pièces à problème» de Shakespeare, elle aborde notamment des questions religieuses, avec le personnage ambigu du juif Shylock, et explore la thématique du trompeur trompé.
