I SAW a gray-haired man, a figure of hale age, sitting at a desk and writing.

He seemed to be in a room in a tower, very high, so that through the tall window on his left one perceived only distances, a remote horizon of sea, a headland and that vague haze and glitter in the sunset that many miles away marks a city. All the appointments of this room were orderly and beautiful, and in some subtle quality, in this small difference and that, new to me and strange. They were in no fashion I could name, and the simple costume the man wore suggested neither period nor country. It might, I thought, be the Happy Future, or Utopia, or the Land of Simple Dreams; an errant mote of memory, Henry James's phrase and story of "The Great Good Place, " twinkled across my mind, and passed and left no light.

The man I saw wrote with a thing like a fountain pen, a modern touch that prohibited any historical retrospection, and as he finished each sheet, writing in an easy flowing hand, he added it to a growing pile upon a graceful little table under the window. His last done sheets lay loose, partly covering others that were clipped together into fascicles.

Clearly he was unaware of my presence, and I stood waiting until his pen should come to a pause. Old as he certainly was he wrote with a steady hand.

Aucune partie de la science zoologique n'est restée aussi obscure que celle qui s'occupe des céphalopodes qui vivent aux grandes profondeurs de la mer. C'est un pur hasard, par exemple, qui amena la découverte que fit le prince de Monaco, pendant l'été de 1895, d'une douzaine environ de formes nouvelles, parmi lesquelles se trouvait le tentacule mentionné plus haut. Il arriva qu'un cachalot fut tué, au large de Terceira, par des baleiniers, et, dans ses derniers efforts, il se précipita contre le yacht du prince, le manqua, roula par-dessous et mourut à vingt mètres du gouvernail. 

Dans son agonie, il rejeta un certain nombre de gros objets. Le prince, se rendant vaguement compte de leur étrangeté et de leur importance, put, par un heureux expédient, s'en emparer avant qu'ils n'eussent coulé à fond. Il mit ses hélices en mouvement, et ces objets bizarres demeurèrent dans les tourbillons ainsi formés jusqu'à ce qu'une chaloupe fût mise à la mer. C'étaient des céphalopodes entiers, et des fragments de céphalopodes, quelques-uns de proportions gigantesques et presque tous inconnus de la science."

"Je demeurai affalé sur l'un des bancs de rameurs du petit canot pendant je ne sais combien de temps, songeant que, si j'en avais seulement la force, je boirais de l'eau de mer pour devenir fou et mourir plus vite. Tandis que j'étais ainsi étendu, je vis, sans y attacher plus d'intérêt qu'à une image quelconque, une voile venir vers moi du bord de la ligne d'horizon. Mon esprit devait, sans doute, battre la campagne, et cependant je me rappelle fort distinctement tout ce qui arriva. Je me souviens du balancement infernal des flots, qui me donnait le vertige, et de la danse continuelle de la voile à l'horizon ; j'avais aussi la conviction absolue d'être déjà mort, et je pensais, avec une amère ironie, à l'inutilité de ce secours qui arrivait trop tard - et de si peu - pour me trouver encore vivant.
Pendant un espace de temps qui me parut interminable, je restais sur ce banc, la tête contre le bordage, à regarder s'approcher la goélette secouée et balancée. C'était un petit bâtiment, gréé de voiles latines, qui courait de larges bordées, car il allait en plein contre le vent. Il ne me vint pas un instant l'idée d'essayer d'attirer son attention, et, depuis le moment où j'aperçus distinctement son flanc et celui où je me retrouvai dans une cabine d'arrière, je n'ai que des souvenirs confus. Je garde encore une vague impression d'avoir été soulevé jusqu'au passavant, d'avoir vu une grosse figure rubiconde, pleine de taches de rousseur et entourée d'une chevelure et d'une barbe rouges, qui me regardait du haut de la passerelle ; d'avoir vu aussi une autre face très brune avec des yeux extraordinaires tout près des miens ; mais jusqu'à ce que je les eusse revus, je crus à un cauchemar. Il me semble qu'on dut verser, peu après, quelque liquide entre mes dents serrées, et ce fut tout."
 
Edward Prendick a fait naufrage. Seul survivant, il est sauvé par un bateau chargé d'animaux et est soigné par le docteur Montgomery, l'assistant du mystérieux docteur Moreau. Obligé, il se retrouve dans l'île appartenant à ce dernier et va de mystère en mystère...

"Les atterrissages de sirènes qu'ont jusqu'ici mentionnés les chroniques sont entachés d'invraisemblance. Et même les détails circonstanciés qui nous sont donnés à propos de la sirène de Bruges, si habile aux travaux de dames, laissent des doutes aux sceptiques. Je dois avouer que, l'année dernière encore, je professais une incrédulité absolue sur ce genre d'aventures. Mais maintenant, en face des faits indiscutables qui se sont produits dans mon voisinage immédiat, et dont Melville, de Seaton Carew, mon cousin au second degré, fut le principal témoin, j'entrevois ces vieilles légendes sous un jour tout différent. Cependant, tant de gens se sont efforcés d'étouffer cette affaire que, n'étaient mes enquêtes personnelles très complètes, on se serait, dans une dizaine d'années, heurté aux mêmes obscurités qui rendent si malaisément croyables toutes les légendes similaires. À l'heure actuelle même, beaucoup d'esprits restent perplexes.
Les difficultés qui s'opposèrent à l'étouffement complet de cette affaire étaient exceptionnelles, et la façon dont elles furent en grande partie surmontées prouve combien impérieux sont les motifs qui poussent à garder secrètes des histoires de cette sorte. Dans le cas actuel, la scène où se déroulèrent ces événements n'a rien d'obscur ni d'inaccessible. Le drame prend naissance sur la plage, à l'est de Sandgate Castle, dans la direction de Folkestone, et il se dénoue également sur la plage, non loin de la jetée, c'est-à-dire à moins de deux milles de distance. L'aventure a commencé en plein jour, par une après-midi d'août, claire et bleue, en face des fenêtres ouvertes d'une demi-douzaine de maisons. Cela seul suffit à rendre stupéfiant le manque de détails préliminaires ; mais à ce sujet vous aurez peut-être une opinion différente plus tard." 
 
Miss Waters a été sauvée de la noyade (elle avait une crampe) et recueillie par une famille bourgeoise anglaise : les Bunting. Quelle n'est pas leur surprise lorsqu'ils s'aperçoivent que celle-ci est une sirène ! Elle tente de séduire Harry, le fiancé d'une amie des Bunting. Va-t-il succomber au chant des sirènes ?

On the Night of the Strange Bird, many people at Sidderton (and some nearer) saw a Glare on the Sidderford moor. But no one in Sidderford saw it, for most of Sidderford was abed.

All day the wind had been rising, so that the larks on the moor chirruped fitfully near the ground, or rose only to be driven like leaves before the wind. The sun set in a bloody welter of clouds, and the moon was hidden. The glare, they say, was golden like a beam shining out of the sky, not a uniform blaze, but broken all over by curving flashes like the waving of swords. It lasted but a moment and left the night dark and obscure. There were letters about it in Nature, and a rough drawing that no one thought very like. (You may see it for yourself-the drawing that was unlike the glare-on page 42 of Vol. cclx. of that publication.)

None in Sidderford saw the light, but Annie, Hooker Durgan's wife, was lying awake, and she saw the reflection of it-a flickering tongue of gold-dancing on the wall.
