Résumé

Voltaire's masterpiece, Candide, was published in 1759. It is a biting satire on a variety of Voltaire's contemporaries in the world of philosophy as well as organized religion. Predominantly, it skewers philosophical speculation, especially the fallacy of optimism, in the face of real world experience. This book contains the full text of Candide as well as a bit of literary criticism, history, philosophical writings, dialogues and shorter pieces. It also contains other fiction (Candide is regarded as fiction) including: Zadig, or Destiny; The Way the World Goes, Vision of Babouc; Micromegas; and The Story of the Good Brahmin.
