Michael Henchard est un jeune saisonnier qui vit avec sa femme, Susan, et sa fille, Elizabeth-Jane, dans un village du Wessex.

Or la jeune femme, déshonorée, se voit contrainte d'épouser Michael pour retrouver sa dignité. Pas si simple, puisque le maire de Casterbridge, devant la loi, reste un homme marié. C'est le moment que choisissent, pour surgir du passé, Susan et sa fille Elisabeth-Jane.

Dix archéologues amateurs, que la pluie oblige à renoncer à une excursion, se racontent à tour de rôle les amours malheureuses de jeunes femmes, souvent belles et fortunées, que leur immaturité ou leur ambition entraîne parfois dans des situations assez scabreuses. Arrivés au terme de leur histoire, nos narrateurs, en bons victoriens qu'ils sont, se voient contraints, non sans ironie, à critiquer leur héroïne, dont la mentalité leur demeure, de toute façon, totalement étrangère. Victimes des conventions sociales, frustrées dans leurs désirs amoureux, ballotées entre des sentiments contraire, ces "nobles dames" sont les jouets du destin et c'est une vision fort pessimiste du mariage, de l'amour et de la nature féminine que nous offre ce recueil. Sous l'anecdote, tantôt humoritique, tantôt mélodramatique, Thomas Hardy, comme dans Tess, aborde "des sujets auxquels tout le monde pense mais dont personne ne souffle mot" et souligne le côté mystérieux, parfois absurde de l'existence. Par la simplicité et la portée universelle de leurs thèmes, ces nouvelles s'apparentent au conte parlé et à la ballade populaire. Si elles en ont les défauts, elles en ont aussi les qualités. Alors, écoutons ces histoires. Imaginons-nous installés au coin du feu, dans un musée empli de fossile où les oiseaux empaillés semblent "cligner de l'oeil". Les dix nobles dames, numérotées comme autant de pièces de collection, appartiennent au passé. Acceptons, comme Hardy nous les offre - avec un clin d'oeil -, ces ballades en prose des "Dames du temps jadis". Et ne boudons pas notre plaisir.

Elfride Swancourt was a girl whose emotions lay very near the surface. Their nature more precisely, and as modified by the creeping hours of time, was known only to those who watched the circumstances of her history.

Personally, she was the combination of very interesting particulars, whose rarity, however, lay in the combination itself rather than in the individual elements combined. As a matter of fact, you did not see the form and substance of her features when conversing with her; and this charming power of preventing a material study of her lineaments by an interlocutor, originated not in the cloaking effect of a well-formed manner (for her manner was childish and scarcely formed), but in the attractive crudeness of the remarks themselves. Tous les motifs chers a Thomas Hardy irriguent cette surprenante parabole, chant d'adieu qui prend conge de la fiction sur un ton cruel et burlesque. Marcel Proust en soulignera l'e trange attrait en ces termes : "une tre s belle chose qui ressemble malheureusement un tout petit peu (en mille fois mieux) a ce que je fais... Il n'y manque me me pas la le ge re part de grotesque qui s'attache aux grandes oeuvres" .

One evening of late summer, before the nineteenth century had reached one-third of its span, a young man and woman, the latter carrying a child, were approaching the large village of Weydon-Priors, in Upper Wessex, on foot. They were plainly but not ill clad, though the thick hoar of dust which had accumulated on their shoes and garments from an obviously long journey lent a disadvantageous shabbiness to their appearance just now.

The man was of fine figure, swarthy, and stern in aspect; and he showed in profile a facial angle so slightly inclined as to be almost perpendicular. He wore a short jacket of brown corduroy, newer than the remainder of his suit, which was a fustian waistcoat with white horn buttons, breeches of the same, tanned leggings, and a straw hat overlaid with black glazed canvas. At his back he carried by a looped strap a rush basket, from which protruded at one end the crutch of a hay-knife, a wimble for hay-bonds being also visible in the aperture. His measured, springless walk was the walk of the skilled countryman as distinct from the desultory shamble of the general labourer; while in the turn and plant of each foot there was, further, a dogged and cynical indifference personal to himself, showing its presence even in the regularly interchanging fustian folds, now in the left leg, now in the right, as he paced along.
