ABOUT THE AUTHOREdward Bulwer-Lytton (1803-1873) was a British writer and politician. He is known for his popular novels of the 19th century, such as "The Last Days of Pompeii" (1834) and "Zanoni" (1842). Bulwer-Lytton was also a member of the British Parliament and held ministerial positions. His writing style was often characterized by romanticism and a passion for the occult. He is famous for the opening line of his novel "Paul Clifford" (1830): "It was a dark and stormy night." Bulwer-Lytton left a lasting mark on 19th-century literature.

Deux jeunes hommes, Clodius et Lycias, un notable grec, se livrent à une course de char dans les rues de Pompéi.
Elle doit les départager aux yeux de Julia dont ils sont épris chacun. Cependant, alors qu'il traverse le forum, Lycias bouscule une jeune esclave, Nidia. En la reconduisant chez son maître, il constate qu'elle mène une existence des plus éprouvantes. Il décide donc de la racheter. Mais peu de temps après, Lycias s'éprend d'Hélène, la pupille du sombre et mystérieux Arbacès, grand prêtre d'Isis, et l'en- lève. Arbacès propose alors à Julia qui, elle, désire épouser le jeune Grec, de se venger de l'infidèle en lui faisant boire un philtre d'amour. Mais Nidia surprend la conversation, s'empare du flacon et le fait boire à Lycias, qui devient fou.
De rage, Arbacès tue l'ancienne esclave et fait arrêter Lycias pour meurtre. Le Grec est condamné à être jeté aux lions. Le jour de l'exécution, le Vésuve entre en éruption et détruit la ville...
