Based on Benjamin Britten's opera A Midsummer Night's Dream, Op. 64, this 15-minute choral suite was arranged and adapted by Lee Kesselman, and he has remained true to Britten's original score, with some adaptations to lend itself to a choral ensemble. These four choruses can be performed singly or as a suite. The editor has added some optional introductory lines, using words of Shakespeare which help to frame each chorus. This work presents an excellent and accessible opportunity for young singers to experience the operatic works of one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century--Benjamin Britten. Choral Music Experience

'A Charm of Lullabies' was written in December 1947 for the mezzo-soprano Nancy Evans. Keen to provide her with a work for her recital programmes, Britten was helped in the choice of texts for 'A Charm of Lullabies' by Evans' husband Eric Crozier, who had recently written the libretto for Albert Herring. The work brings together an anthology of diverse texts unified by the themes of night and sleep and is one of the most genial and uncomplicated of Britten's song-cycles. Colin Matthews's arrangement differs in several respects from the original piano version, in particular by expanding it to give it the extra dimension needed for an orchestral song-cycle, and by joining the first three songs, and the fourth and fifth, in effect presenting the cycle in two parts. Wilfred Owen meurt au front le 4 novembre 1918, une semaine exactement avant la signature de l'armistice. Il a alors 25 ans. De son vivant, seuls quatre de ses poèmes ont été publiés. Et pourtant, avec les poèmes de guerre, composés de janvier 1917 à novembre 1918, il est clair que c'est d'un grand écrivain qu'il s'agit : poète bien sûr de l'indignation mais surtout de la compassion, non pas tellement de la révolte et du cri. Il y a dans ses vers une extraordinaire capacité de rendre sensible le tragique et le misère des hommes pris au piège de la guerre. Au coeur des orages de feu et de fer, il y a cette voix fermement attentive à la très forte et délicate présence des sentiments les plus humains, et qui sait rendre le pathétique de cette présence-là. Les poèmes de guerre d'Owen constituent l'hymne à la paix d'un qui est sans doute mort pour rien. Benjamin Britten, dont on sait qu'il fut un pacifiste convaincu, ne s'y est pas trompé, qui a intercalé dans le texte latin de son "War Requiem" les vers parmi les plus beaux et les plus poignants de ce très jeune et déjà très grand poète.

These songs were originally composed as part of the cycle 'Les Illuminations op 18', but they were withdrawn by the composer. They have been edited by Colin Matthews from the composer's manuscript short score and are now available for the first time in print. Matthews has scored the fragments for high voice and strings. This publication includes the full score and the edited piano part/short score.
