L'ordre des Mentats, pour sa part, créé par le Gilbertus Albans qui a été entraîné par le robot Erasmus, a choisi de son côté de s'allier au mouvement butlérien.
Un entraînement spécial, formant à la logique la plus poussée dès l'enfance, et assisté d'une drogue, permet à certains hommes - et à des hommes seulement pour ce qu'on en sait - de devenir des " ordinateurs humains ". Mais Gilbertus Albans lui-même se trouve dans une situation difficile : s'il a rejoint un temps le mouvement butlérien, il s'oppose à la politique de Manford Torondo, devenu fou, qui veut abolir toute science.
De son côté, et pour équilibrer la puissance des Mentats masculins, la mère supérieure Raquella tente de reconstruire son École des soeurs sur Wallach IX, avec l'aide de son élève la plus douée, Valya Harkonnen, qui poursuit aussi un autre but : tirer vengeance de Vorian Atreides, héros légendaire du jihad butlérien qu'elle tient pour responsable de la déchéance de sa famille.
