Voici le chef d'oeuvre anglais du XIXème siècle, écrit par le grand William Makepeace Thackeray, et seul Dickens peut rivaliser avec lui en ce qui concerne l'impact littéraire qu'eurent ses romans à cette époque. La Foire aux Vanités est sans contexte son plus grand livre dans lequel Thackeray dévoile tout son talent pour la satire, la critique des moeurs et les exquis portraits des protagonistes. Le titre est révélateur de la toile de fond du roman, où toutes ces personnes se déchaînent dans cette Foire qu'est le Londres du XIXème pour arriver à leur fin.



Thackeray nous présente donc sa foire aux vanités comme un spectacle de marionnettes, il met en scène une multitude de personnages dont il précise bien qu'aucun n'est prépondérant. Pourtant le lecteur en retient surtout un : Rebecca Sharp alias Mistress Rawdon Crawley. Car si l'un des personnages symbolise à lui seul les deux sens du terme vanité, c'est bien celui-là. Rebecca, Becky pour les intimes, est issue du milieu populaire mais sera élevée parmi les jeunes filles de haut rang grâce à un acte de charité. Elle est destinée à devenir gouvernante mais Becky a de bien plus grandes ambitions.



Comme Balzac, comme Zola, l'auteur parsème cette fresque grandiose de toutes les activités humaines: amour, haines, intrigues, querelles de famille, conflits d'héritage, religion, rivalités noblesse/bourgeoisie, bals, guerres napoléoniennes. Mais la foire aux vanités est aussi une comédie satyrique: Thackeray s'arrange donc pour ridiculiser tous ceux qui se croient importants, ce qui apporte beaucoup de piquant et d'humour au récit. Les aristocrates et nouveaux riches de l'époque en prennent pour leur grade et, bien souvent, il faut avouer qu'ils le méritent, car beaucoup sont vraiment ridicules!



Une formidable comédie humaine à l'anglaise, ponctuée du légendaire flegme britannique. Irrésistible!
