D'autre part, la perception du public est évoquée : l'exposition répétée aux images rend insensible ou l'impuissance suscitée dégoûte du message. La question du voyeurisme se pose aussi, chaque image pouvant susciter une excitation malsaine..

Devant la douleur des autres

Dalton Harron, surnommé " Diddy ", 33 ans, divorcé, se rend à un rendez-vous d'affaires. Sur le trajet, son train tombe en panne dans un tunnel. Lorsque Diddy descend pour voir ce qu'il se passe, il a une altercation avec un cheminot et, sans trop savoir ce qu'il fait, l'assomme. Après être remonté dans le train qui s'est remis en marche, un besoin de confession le pousse à faire le récit de son acte à une jeune fille aveugle, Hester. Cette dernière lui rétorque alors qu'il n'a jamais quitté le compartiment. A-t-il rêvé ou réellement accompli ce forfait ?
Ces deux êtres, chacun dans sa nuit, vont tenter de vivre ensemble. Mais à New York où ils mènent une existence de reclus, Diddy ne cessera d'errer dans un dédale d'ambiguïtés où se refusera à le suivre Hester trop menacée elle-même pour jouer un rôle de planche de salut. Et Diddy reviendra sur le lieu (supposé ?) de son crime où il aura une vision de mort universelle et rencontrera la sienne propre.
Un à un, Diddy a saisi les instruments de cette panoplie de la mort que tout homme porte en soi ; et, un à un, se sont épuisés les derniers recours que lui offrait la vie, c'est-à-dire le monde des autres. 

 
Susan Sontag est sans doute l'écrivain américain le plus " européen ". Née en 1933 à New York, elle est décédée le 28 décembre 2004. A l'âge de trente ans, elle publie son premier roman, Le Bienfaiteur (Le Seuil, 1965), une étude sur la formation de la personnalité. Dans les années 60, elle écrit pour différents magazines et revues. Très engagée à gauche, figure de la scène new-yorkaise, elle est proche d'intellectuels français comme Roland Barthes, auquel elle a consacré un livre (L'écriture même : à propos de Roland Barthes Christian Bourgois). Elle publie en 1977 un essai, Sur la photographie où elle s'interroge sur la différence entre réalité et expérience. Elle défend le concept de " transparence ", autrement dit de l'évidence de l'oeuvre, avant toute interprétation. Elle publie également de nombreux romans, dont L'Amant du volcan (1992) et  En Amérique (1999) pour lequel elle a reçu le National Book Award. Par ailleurs, le Prix Jérusalem lui a été attribué en 2001 et le Prix de la Paix des libraires à Francfort en 2003 pour l'ensemble de son oeuvre.

La publication de ce titre au format de poche s'inscrit dans un programme de publication de titres inédits et épuisés de Susan Sontag initié aux éditions Bourgois depuis 2008.

Dans ce roman où s'estompent les limites qui séparent le rêve de la réalité, Susan Sontag décrit en philosophe et romancière, les étapes de cette abolition.
