Des le debut du roman, il connait un grand malheur puisqu'il perd sa femme, Lady Glencora, emportee par une grippe. Il se retrouve seul pour affronter plusieurs difficultes serieuses avec ses trois enfants: ses deux fils se sont fait renvoyer de leurs colleges respectifs (l'un des deux se met a jouer aux courses), et sa fille s'est liee a un jeune homme dont la famille appartient a la gentry, lui faisant craindre une mesalliance. Le roman est hante par le personnage de Lady Glencora qui, malgre sa disparition, continue de faire sentir son influence sur tous, et d'abord sur son mari. Cette evocation, par Trollope, de l'automne du patriarche est consideree comme un sommet, particulierement emouvant, de son uvre."
