Lewis' work on the nature of love divides love into four categories; Affection, Friendship, Eros and Charity. The first three come naturally to humanity. Charity, however, the Gift-love of God, is divine, and without this supernatural love, the natural loves become distorted and even dangerous.

Lewis désigne par le terme de voie, ou "Tao", dans ce livre de 1943. Pour ceux qui sont à l'intérieur de la voie, l'éducation consiste à favoriser la naissance de ces réactions au monde qui sont justes en elles-mêmes, indépendamment du fait qu'on les éprouve ou non - ces réactions dont la possibilité définit l'humanité même. Ceux qui sont étrangers au Tao doivent par contre, s'ils sont logiques, regarder tous les sentiments comme également irrationnels, comme des sortes de buées qui nous cachent la réalité. Ce n'est pas que ce soient des hommes mauvais : ce ne sont plus des hommes du tout. En sortant du Tao, ils sont entrés dans le vide. Quant à ceux qu'ils dominent, ils ne sont pas forcément malheureux ; ce ne sont pas des hommes non plus : ce sont des produits fabriqués. La victoire finale de l'homme ce n'est pas un affranchissement de I'"ordre naturel" ; c'est au contraire un retour à la nature, mais qui s'affranchit de toute médiation culturelle. Aujourd'hui, cette libération s'appelle "écologisme" et "transhumanisme". Ce sont les autres noms de l'abolition de l'homme.
C. S. Lewis (1898-1963), philosophe et professeur de littérature à Oxford puis Cambridge, est l'auteur notamment des Chroniques de Narnia.
