Tous ceux qui l'entouraient pouvaient tirer profit de la mort de Mrs Ingelthorp, riche maîtresse de la propriété de Styles : son second mari, Alfred Ingelthorp ; ses beaux-enfants, maintenus dans sa dépendance financière ; Cynthia, sa jeune protégée... Et tous auraient pu se procurer la strychnine qui l'a tuée.
Mais pourquoi Hercule Poirot protège-t-il si obstinément Alfred Ingelthorp, alors que celui-ci se défend à peine contre les soupçons grandissants qui pèsent sur lui ? Patience ! Nous ne comprendrons qu'aux dernières pages le subtil jeu de stratégie qui s'est noué entre ces deux hommes, aussi redoutablement intelligents l'un que l'autre.
Dès ce premier roman, publié en 1920, Agatha Christie démontre son extraordinaire habileté à nous tenir en haleine jusqu'au bout, alors même que les circonstances, les personnages, les indices nous sont parfaitement connus. Et surtout, elle campe le duo qui devait faire sa gloire : celui du petit détective belge et de son fidèle Hastings.

Pas d'empreintes autour du cottage du capitaine Trevelyan à cause de la neige qui tombe sur l'Angleterre en général et sur Exhampton (Devon) en particulier. Aucun objet volé malgré le désordre de la pièce où gît le corps du maître du lieu. Un meurtre commis par un familier, conclut l'inspecteur Narra-cott, par exemple quelqu'un comme James Pearson, ce neveu de Trevelyan qui s'est hâté de quitter Exhampton dès que la nouvelle du crime a été connue. Pourtant l'inspecteur ne croit guère à sa culpabilité, en dépit des apparences. Emily Trefusis, la fiancée de James, n'y croit pas du tout et décide de trouver le coupable, enrôlant pour l'aider le journa-liste Enderby. Somme toute, en dehors de James, les suspects ne manquent pas : les autres neveux de Trevelyan ou encore ces dames d'Afrique du Sud qui ont loué un bon prix sa maison de Sittaford, le défunt étant aussi âpre au gain qu'heureux en affaires, au contraire de son ami le major Burnaby, celui qui a découvert le crime à cause des tables tournantes. Des tables tournantes ? direz-vous. Ce sont elles qui ont annoncé la mort du capitaine à cinq heures vingt-cinq mais, cela, c'est le commencement de l'histoire....

La jeune Nick Buckley a invité quelques amis dans sa belle maison des Cornouailles. Mais ces vacances manquent de tourner au drame lorsque, par trois fois, Nick échappe de justesse à la mort. Pour Hercule Poirot, séjournant par hasard dans un hôtel voisin, il ne peut s’agir d’accidents. Le fameux détective met donc sans tarder ses talents au service de la jeune femme afin de découvrir qui cherche à l’éliminer.
