Ce roman est un apologue de l'aliénation. Un professeur de littérature comparée, spécialiste de Gogol et de Kafka, s'est métamorphosé en une sorte de «glande mammaire» comme on en voit parfois en rêve ou sur les peintures de Dali. De cette situation, Philip Roth tire des effets du plus haut comique et de la plus franche obscénité.
