Le Point et la Ligne : une aventure en mathématiques élémentaires [The Dot and the Line: A Romance in Lower Mathematics] écrit et illustré par Norton Juster, c'est un livre pour enfants - ou mieux pour l'enfant qui est en chacun de nous - classique et célébrissime aux États-Unis, où il fut publié en 1963, par la fameuse maison d'édition Random House, et où il est depuis toujours réimprimé. L'histoire de Le Point et la Ligne a été inspirée par Flatland. Fantaisie en plusieurs dimensions (traduction française publiée par Zones Sensibles en 2012), dans lequel le protagoniste se rend dans un univers unidimensionnel appelé «Lineland», où les femmes sont des points et les hommes sont des lignes. Mais dans notre aventure en mathématiques élémentaires, notre traducteur choisit de faire correspondre le sexe des protagonistes au genre grammatical de leur nom en français - la ligne est féminine, le point masculin -, ce qui réserve quelques surprises. La ligne est amoureuse du point, parfait à ses yeux, mais le point la dédaigne et lui préfère un gribouillis fou jusqu'à ce que la ligne découvre qu'elle aussi peut faire de son être mille folies, formes et mouvements...
Traduit pour la première fois en français, ce récit mêle les limites à l'infini des mathématiques et celles des capacités de chacun à se réinventer. Histoire d'une simple aventure amoureuse, c'est à travers la naïve complexité de son décor qu'on est charmé. Il y a quelque chose du regard curieux et ingénu de quiconque comparerait un ciel étoilé à une carte d'astronomie. Nous espérons que ce livre sera un succès en France comme ce le fut aux États-Unis. En 1965, le célèbre réalisateur de films d'animation Chuck Jones a travaillé avec Norton Juster pour adapter The Dot and the Line en un court métrage de 10 minutes pour la Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. L'histoire est dite par Robert Morley dont la narration reprend presque mot pour mot le livre. The Dot and the Line a remporté l'Oscar du court métrage d'animation en 1965 et la Palme d'Or du court métrage au Festival de Cannes en 1966.
