"Pour bien connaitre la nature des peuples, il faut être prince, et pour bien connaitre celle des princes, il faut être peuple"Dans ce texte inaugural de la philosophie politique, Machiavel se fait tour à tour "peuple" et "prince". Toutes les clés concernant la théories de l'Etat républicain, c'est-à-dire libéré de la théologie, la société et le droit moderne, et plus radicalement, la liberté telle que nous la concevons désormais, s'y trouvent rassemblées.

Les Discours sont présentés ici dans une nouvelle traduction, plus proche de la langue de Machiavel, et sont accompagnés pour la première fois en France d'un apparat critique indispensable à la lecture du texte. Conçus sous la forme d'un commentaire des dix premiers livres de l'Histoire de Tite-Live, ils représentent l'achèvement de la pensée machiavélienne, à mi-chemin entre Le Prince (1513), l'Art de la guerre (1519-1521) et les Histoires florentines (1520-1525). Ils marquent la naissance, au moment du déclin de la Respublica Christiana et du Sacrum Romanum Imperium, d'une nouvelle théorie et pratique de la " politique ", à l'écart des idées antiques sur le meilleur gouvernement, des conceptions éthico-juridiques médiévales, et des modèles humanistes des " miroirs des princes ". Il est essentiellement question dans les Discours de la sécurité et de la puissance des Etats, sur fond de cet état de pierre qui va désormais constituer la trame de leurs rapports. Apparaît ainsi ce qui jusque-là n'avait pas encore été pensé, la " politique étrangère ", domaine pour la première fois " problématisé " par Machiavel. La politique nouvelle se déploie sur le plan d'une historicité radicale où la vertu, c'est-à-dire la liberté des choix et des décisions, se subordonne à la fortune, à savoir aux nécessités de l'histoire. Face à cette historicité, se sont défaites aussi bien la métaphysique chrétienne du salut que la métaphysique platonicienne des formes iléales et intemporelles. La pensée de Machiavel ne restera-t-elle pas la limite infranchissable de toute politique tant que les " relations internationales " seront assujetties aux lois et aux raisons de la puissance ? Il n'était pas inutile de rendre cette œuvre fondatrice pleinement accessible aux lecteurs français, à la fois dans sa littéralité et dans le détail des allusions historiques dont elle est tissée.

Un amant qui se désole, un maître peu rusé, un moine mal morigéné, un parasite, enfant gâté de la malice, voilà pour aujourd'hui votre passe-temps : c'est ainsi que Machiavel décrit les protagonistes de La Mandragore dans le prologue. Car la pièce est l'histoire d'une tromperie jouée à un maître florentin qui se croit très malin et qui, sans s'en rendre compte, se laisse entraîner dans une histoire extravagante afin que sa femme tombe enceinte... Le rythme de la pièce est parfait, l'orchestration des dialogues et de l'action gérée avec une maestria digne d'un grand metteur en scène. Dans cette comédie, qui fut représentée pour la première fois en 1520, Machiavel démontre de façon éblouissante qu'il a su s'approprier la tradition comique des auteurs latins, tels que Plaute et Térence, et la réinventer en lui imprimant un nouveau souffle. Même si le regard désenchanté et lucide de l'homme politique, celui qui notamment dans Le Prince, analysait les hommes sans complaisance, n'est pas absent.

The Prince: 
Il Principe (The Prince) is a political treatise by the Florentine philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli, written c. 1513, published posthumously 1532. The Prince is sometimes claimed to be one of the first works of  modern political philosophy, in which the effective truth is taken to be more important than any abstract ideal. It was also in direct conflict with the dominant Catholic and scholastic doctrines of the time concerning how to consider politics and ethics. Machiavelli dedicated The Prince to the ruling Medici of the time, leading some today to still speculate whether the book was a satire. Niccolò Machiavelli asserted that The Prince (president, dictator, prime minister, etc.) does not have to be concerned with ethics, as long as their motivation is to protect the state. It is this questionable belief that in many ways had lead to the modern world as we know it. His assertion was that the head of state must protect the state no matter the cost and no matter what rules he or she breaks in the process.
The Art of War:
written between 1519 and 1520 and published in 1521. It was the only historical or political work printed during Machiavelli's lifetime. Voltaire said, "Machiavelli taught Europe the art of war; it had long been practiced, without being known." Machiavelli considered The Art of War his greatest achievement. This book teaches how to recruit, train, motivate, and discipline an army, shows the difference between strategy and tactics. Niccolo Machiavelli, the first great Italian historian, and one of the most eminent political writers of any age or country, was born at Florence, May 3, 1469. He was of an old though not wealthy Tuscan family, his father, who was a jurist, dying when Niccolo was sixteen years old. We know nothing of Machiavelli's youth and little about his studies. He does not seem to have received the usual humanistic education of his time, as he knew no Greek. The first notice of Machiavelli is in 1498 when we find him holding the office of Secretary in the second Chancery of the Signoria, which office he retained till the downfall of the Florentine Republic in 1512. His unusual ability was soon recognized, and in 1500 he was sent on a mission to Louis XII. of France, and afterward on an embassy to Cæsar Borgia, the lord of Romagna, at Urbino. Machiavelli's report and description of this and subsequent embassies to this prince, shows his undisguised admiration for the courage and cunning of Cæsar, who was a master in the application of the principles afterwards exposed in such a skillful and uncompromising manner by Machiavelli in his Prince.
